🔧 Suburban - Ignition Coil Replacement

Your Suburban has eight ignition coils, one above each spark plug. A failed coil can cause rough running, reduced power, a flashing check-engine light, and cylinder-specific misfire codes.

You may replace only the diagnosed failed coil. Replacing all eight is not required unless several coils are failing or their rubber boots are badly deteriorated.

• 💨 Clean loose dirt from around the coils before removal so it cannot enter the spark-plug wells.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

• Use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
• Lift the clamp from the negative post and position it where it cannot spring back into contact.
• Wait at least one minute before handling the ignition-coil connectors.

Step 2: Locate the Correct Ignition Coil

• Stand at the front of your Suburban and identify the required cylinder.
• The driver-side cylinders are 1-3-5-7 from front to rear. The passenger-side cylinders are 2-4-6-8 from front to rear.
• Each coil is mounted along the top of its valve cover and has one electrical connector and one short rubber boot leading to the spark plug.
• Use the compressed-air blow gun while wearing safety glasses to remove dirt around the selected coil and boot.

Step 3: Disconnect the Coil Connector

• Use the small nylon trim tool to gently release the connector’s locking tab if it cannot be moved by hand. A trim tool is a nonmetallic lever that helps release plastic clips without cutting them.
• Press the connector release and pull the connector straight away from the coil.
• Do not pull on the wires.
• Warm plastic clips gently with your hands.

Step 4: Remove the Ignition Coil

• Use the 10mm socket, 3-inch extension, and 1/4-inch-drive ratchet to remove the coil retaining bolt.
• Grip the coil and rubber boot. Twist it gently to break the boot free from the spark plug.
• Pull the coil and boot straight away from the valve cover.
• Inspect the boot for cracking, burning, oil, or a white tracking line. Tracking is a visible line where ignition voltage has leaked along the rubber.

Step 5: Inspect the Spark-Plug Area

• Use the compressed-air blow gun and safety glasses to clear remaining debris from the opening.
• If the boot is wet with engine oil, stop and inspect the valve-cover sealing area. Installing a new coil without correcting an oil leak can cause another failure.
• If the old boot stayed on the spark plug, carefully remove it by hand before installing the replacement coil.

Step 6: Prepare the Replacement Coil

• Confirm that the replacement coil and boot match the removed components in connector shape, mounting position, and overall length.
• Using a gloved fingertip, apply only a thin film of silicone dielectric grease inside the open end of the rubber boot. Dielectric grease is an electrical-safe silicone grease that helps keep moisture out.
• Do not place grease on the coil connector terminals or coat the metal spark-plug contact.

Step 7: Install the Replacement Coil

• Guide the boot squarely over the spark plug and press until the coil is fully seated.
• Start the retaining bolt by hand to prevent cross-threading.
• Use the in-lb torque wrench with 10mm socket to tighten the coil bolt. A torque wrench measures tightening force so the small bolt is not damaged.
• Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
• Do not use an impact wrench.

Step 8: Reconnect the Electrical Connector

• Push the electrical connector straight onto the replacement coil until the locking tab clicks.
• Gently pull on the connector body to verify that it is locked.
• Repeat Steps 2-8 for any additional coils being replaced, using the same listed tools.

Step 9: Reconnect the Battery

• Place the negative cable clamp fully onto the battery post.
• Use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch-drive ratchet to tighten the clamp until secure.
• Do not overtighten or deform the battery terminal.

• ✅ Start the engine and let it idle. It should run evenly without shaking or snapping sounds near the replaced coil.
• 🔎 Confirm that every coil connector is fully locked and that no wiring is touching the exhaust manifolds.
• 🚨 If the check-engine light flashes, shut the engine off immediately and recheck the coil connector, boot seating, spark plug, and diagnosed cylinder.
• 🧰 Clear stored misfire codes with a compatible scan tool if available. The light may otherwise turn off after several successful drive cycles.
• 🚙 Take a gentle 10-minute test drive, then recheck for rough idle, hesitation, or warning lights.
