- Park your Canyon on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn the ignition off and remove the key.
- Open the hood and let the engine cool fully.
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to disconnect the negative battery cable. Move the cable aside so it cannot touch the battery post.
- If you are replacing one coil because of a misfire code, cylinder #1 is at the front of the engine, closest to the radiator.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the Engine Cover
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- If your Canyon has a plastic engine cover, lift it straight upward by hand to release the rubber mounting grommets.
- If any plastic retainers are fitted, use a trim clip removal tool to release them gently.
- Set the cover aside in a safe place.
- Pull straight up, not sideways.
Step 2: Clean Around the Ignition Coils
- Use a compressed air blow gun to blow dirt away from the top of the engine and around each ignition coil.
- This keeps debris from falling into the spark plug wells when the coils are removed.
- Do not spray water or cleaner into the coil openings.
Step 3: Unplug the Ignition Coil Connector
- Find the ignition coil you are replacing. It is the black plastic unit mounted directly above the spark plug.
- Use a small flathead screwdriver to gently lift or slide the connector lock, if equipped.
- Press the connector release tab with your finger and pull the connector straight off the coil.
- If the connector is stuck, use the small flathead screwdriver only to help release the tab. Do not pry hard on the wiring.
- Plastic connectors break easily with age.
Step 4: Remove the Ignition Coil Bolt
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch extension, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the ignition coil retaining bolt.
- Keep the bolt in a safe spot. You will reuse it unless it is damaged.
Step 5: Remove the Old Ignition Coil
- Hold the ignition coil body by hand.
- Twist it slightly left and right to loosen the rubber boot.
- Pull the coil straight upward out of the spark plug well.
- If the rubber boot separates and stays down in the well, remove it carefully by hand or with a suitable non-sharp gripping tool.
- Do not drop anything into the spark plug well.
Step 6: Prepare the New Ignition Coil
- Compare the new ignition coil with the old one. The connector shape, bolt tab, and rubber boot length should match.
- Apply a small pea-sized amount of dielectric grease inside the end of the rubber boot. Dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease that helps seal out moisture.
- Do not pack the boot full of grease.
Step 7: Install the New Ignition Coil
- Slide the new ignition coil straight down into the spark plug well by hand.
- Push firmly until you feel the boot seat onto the spark plug.
- Align the coil mounting hole with the threaded hole in the valve cover.
Step 8: Tighten the Ignition Coil Bolt
- Start the bolt by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch extension, and torque wrench to tighten the bolt.
- Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs)
- Do not overtighten. The mounting area is easy to damage.
Step 9: Reconnect the Coil Connector
- Push the electrical connector onto the ignition coil until it clicks.
- If the connector has a lock, use your fingers or a small flathead screwdriver to slide the lock back into place.
- Lightly tug the connector body to confirm it is locked.
Step 10: Repeat for Additional Coils
- If replacing more than one ignition coil, repeat Steps 3 through 9 for each coil.
- Replace one coil at a time so connectors and locations do not get mixed up.
Step 11: Reinstall the Engine Cover
- Place the engine cover back over its mounting points by hand.
- Press straight down until the rubber grommets seat fully.
- If plastic retainers were removed, reinstall them by hand and press them in until secure.
Step 12: Reconnect the Battery
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to reconnect the negative battery cable.
- Tighten the terminal snugly.
- Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs)
✅ After Repair
- Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes.
- The engine should idle smoothly without shaking or flashing the check engine light.
- If a check engine light was on before repair, it may need several drive cycles to turn off if the fault is fixed.
- If you have a scan tool, clear the stored misfire code after confirming the repair.
- Test drive gently for 10-15 minutes and listen for smooth acceleration.
- If the same cylinder misfire returns, inspect the spark plug, injector, wiring, and compression before replacing more coils.
