🔧 Tucson - Ignition Coil Replacement

Replacing the ignition coils on your Tucson is a beginner-friendly repair. The ignition coils sit on top of the engine and create the spark needed for each spark plug to fire. A bad coil can cause misfires, rough idle, poor fuel economy, or a flashing check engine light.

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool fully before starting. The ignition coils sit near hot engine parts.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging ignition coils to reduce the chance of electrical shorts.
  • ⚠️ Do not pull on the wiring itself. Always press the connector tab and pull the connector body.
  • ⚠️ If the check engine light is flashing, avoid driving until the misfire is fixed. A severe misfire can damage the catalytic converter.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Tucson on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 🌡️ Allow the engine to cool for at least 30 minutes.
  • 🔋 Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal, then move the cable aside so it cannot touch the battery post.
  • 🔎 If you have a misfire code, use an OBD2 scan tool first. Codes P0301, P0302, P0303, and P0304 point to cylinders 1, 2, 3, and 4.
  • ℹ️ Cylinder numbering on the 2.0L inline-4 runs from the front of the engine where the belt/pulley side is located toward the transmission side: cylinder 1, 2, 3, 4.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Engine Cover

  • Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
  • Use both hands to lift the plastic engine cover straight upward. It is held by rubber grommets, which are soft push-in mounts.
  • If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently help lift at the mounting points.
  • Lift evenly to avoid cracking plastic.

Step 2: Locate the Ignition Coils

  • The ignition coils are the four small black modules mounted in a row on top of the engine.
  • Each coil has one electrical connector and one retaining bolt.
  • If replacing only one coil, match the cylinder location to your misfire code before removing anything.

Step 3: Unplug the Coil Connector

  • Use your thumb to press the locking tab on the coil connector.
  • If the tab is tight, use needle-nose pliers carefully on the connector body, not the wires.
  • Pull the connector straight back from the ignition coil.
  • Never pull by the wires.

Step 4: Remove the Ignition Coil Bolt

  • Use a 10mm socket, 3-inch socket extension, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the coil retaining bolt.
  • Set the bolt somewhere safe so it does not fall into the engine bay.

Step 5: Remove the Old Ignition Coil

  • Grip the ignition coil by the top body.
  • Twist it gently left and right to loosen the rubber boot.
  • Pull the coil straight upward out of the spark plug tube.
  • Inspect the coil boot for oil, white tracking marks, cracking, or burning.
  • If oil is inside the spark plug tube, the valve cover gasket may also need repair.

Step 6: Prepare the New Ignition Coil

  • Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease inside the rubber boot using the tube tip.
  • Dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease that helps seal out moisture and makes future removal easier.
  • Do not pack the boot full of grease. A thin film is enough.

Step 7: Install the New Ignition Coil

  • Push the new ignition coil straight down into the spark plug tube by hand.
  • You should feel the rubber boot seat onto the spark plug.
  • Align the bolt hole with the valve cover mounting hole.

Step 8: Reinstall the Coil Bolt

  • Start the bolt by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3-inch socket extension, and torque wrench to tighten the bolt.
  • Torque to 8-10 Nm (71-89 in-lbs)
  • Do not overtighten. The mounting area is aluminum and can strip.

Step 9: Reconnect the Electrical Connector

  • Push the connector onto the ignition coil until it clicks.
  • Gently tug on the connector body to confirm it is locked.

Step 10: Repeat for Additional Coils

  • If replacing more than one ignition coil, repeat Steps 3 through 9 for each coil.
  • Use the same 10mm socket, 3-inch socket extension, ratchet, and torque wrench for each coil bolt.
  • Torque each coil bolt to 8-10 Nm (71-89 in-lbs)

Step 11: Reinstall the Engine Cover

  • Line up the engine cover with the rubber grommet mounts.
  • Press down firmly by hand until the cover seats fully.

Step 12: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to tighten the terminal nut snugly.
  • Torque to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs)

Step 13: Clear Codes and Test

  • Use an OBD2 scan tool to clear stored misfire codes if the check engine light was on.
  • Start the engine and let it idle for 2-3 minutes.
  • Listen for smooth idle and confirm the check engine light does not flash.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Test drive your Tucson for 10-15 minutes with light acceleration first.
  • ✅ Recheck for pending codes using the OBD2 scan tool after the test drive.
  • ✅ If the same misfire code returns, inspect the spark plug, coil connector, wiring, fuel injector, and compression for that cylinder.
  • ✅ If you moved coils around for testing, make sure each connector is fully clicked into place.
