🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Access the ignition coils
- Locate the coils on top of the engine (one per cylinder, lined up in a row).
- If your Accord has a plastic engine cover, remove it using a 10mm socket (or release clips with a flat trim tool) and lift it off.
Step 2: Unplug the coil electrical connector
- Press the connector lock tab and pull the connector straight off the coil.
- If it’s stubborn, use a flat trim tool gently to help the tab—don’t pull on the wires.
Step 3: Remove the coil hold-down bolt
- Use a 10mm socket, 6" extension, and 1/4" ratchet to remove the bolt holding the coil down.
- Set the bolt aside where it won’t fall into the engine bay.
Step 4: Remove the ignition coil
- Twist the coil slightly, then pull straight up to remove it from the spark plug tube.
- Pull straight up to avoid tearing the boot.
Step 5: Prep and install the new coil
- Apply a very small dab of dielectric grease inside the rubber boot (dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease that helps prevent moisture and makes future removal easier).
- Push the coil straight down until it fully seats on the spark plug.
Step 6: Reinstall the hold-down bolt and torque it
- Thread the bolt in by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a torque wrench with a 10mm socket: Torque to 12 Nm (9 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Reconnect the electrical connector
- Push the connector on until it clicks/locks.
- Give it a light tug to confirm it’s latched.
Step 8: Repeat for any other coils (if replacing more than one)
- Repeat Steps 2–7 for each additional coil.
- Do one coil at a time to avoid mix-ups.
Step 9: Reinstall the engine cover and reconnect battery (if disconnected)
- Reinstall the engine cover using a 10mm socket or snap the clips back in place.
- If you disconnected the battery, reconnect the negative terminal using a 10mm socket and tighten securely.

- Start the engine and let it idle for 1–2 minutes. It should run smooth.
- If the check-engine light was on, it may stay on until cleared with a scan tool or after some drive cycles (if the problem is fixed).
- Test drive 10–15 minutes. Watch for hesitation, shaking, or a flashing check-engine light.
