🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Read the Misfire Code
- Use the OBD2 scan tool and plug it into the diagnostic port under the driver side dash.
- Turn the ignition on without starting the engine.
- Read and write down any codes. Cylinder layout is counted from the front pulley side of the engine toward the transmission side.
- Common codes are P0301 for cylinder 1, P0302 for cylinder 2, P0303 for cylinder 3, and P0304 for cylinder 4.
- Write codes down before clearing.
Step 2: Disconnect the Battery
- Open the hood and locate the battery.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
- Move the negative cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the battery post.
Step 3: Remove the Engine Cover
- Grip the plastic engine cover with both hands and pull straight upward.
- If it feels stuck, use a plastic trim removal tool to gently lift near the rubber mounting points.
- Set the cover aside where it will not be stepped on.
Step 4: Locate the Ignition Coils
- The ignition coils sit on top of the engine, one above each spark plug.
- Each coil has one electrical connector and one hold-down bolt.
- Use the misfire code from Step 1 to identify the coil to replace.
- Work on one coil at a time.
Step 5: Clean Around the Coil
- Put on safety glasses.
- Use a compressed air nozzle to blow dirt away from the coil and spark plug well area.
- This helps prevent grit from falling into the spark plug tube when the coil is removed.
Step 6: Unplug the Coil Connector
- Press the locking tab on the electrical connector with your thumb.
- If the tab is hard to press, use needle-nose pliers gently on the connector body only.
- Pull the connector straight off the ignition coil.
- Do not yank the wires.
Step 7: Remove the Coil Hold-Down Bolt
- Use an 8mm socket, 3/8-inch 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the ignition coil hold-down bolt.
- Place the bolt somewhere safe so it does not fall into the engine bay.
Step 8: Remove the Old Ignition Coil
- Twist the coil gently left and right by hand to loosen the rubber boot.
- Pull the coil straight upward.
- If it resists, keep twisting gently while pulling. Do not pry against the plastic coil body.
- Inspect the old coil boot for oil, coolant, cracks, or carbon tracking. Carbon tracking looks like thin black lightning-shaped lines.
Step 9: Prepare the New Ignition Coil
- Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease inside the end of the rubber coil boot.
- Dielectric grease is a non-conductive silicone grease that helps seal moisture out and prevents the boot from sticking to the spark plug.
- Do not pack the boot full of grease.
Step 10: Install the New Ignition Coil
- Push the new ignition coil straight down into the spark plug well by hand.
- You should feel the boot seat onto the spark plug.
- Reinstall the hold-down bolt by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 8mm socket, 3/8-inch 6-inch extension, and torque wrench inch-pound range to tighten the bolt.
- Torque to 8-10 Nm (71-89 in-lbs)
Step 11: Reconnect the Coil Connector
- Push the electrical connector onto the new coil until it clicks.
- Gently tug the connector body by hand to make sure it is locked.
Step 12: Repeat If Replacing More Coils
- If replacing all four coils, repeat Steps 5 through 11 for each coil.
- Use the same 8mm socket, 3/8-inch 6-inch extension, and torque wrench inch-pound range for each hold-down bolt.
- Torque each ignition coil bolt to 8-10 Nm (71-89 in-lbs)
Step 13: Reinstall the Engine Cover
- Line up the engine cover with the rubber mounting grommets.
- Press down firmly by hand until the cover snaps into place.
Step 14: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative battery terminal back onto the battery post.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to tighten the terminal clamp.
- Make it snug. Do not overtighten the soft battery terminal.
Step 15: Clear Codes and Test
- Use the OBD2 scan tool to clear the stored misfire codes.
- Start the engine and let it idle.
- Listen for smooth running and check that the check engine light stays off.
✅ After Repair
- Drive your CX-5 for 10-15 minutes with light throttle first, then normal acceleration.
- If the check engine light returns, use the OBD2 scan tool to read the new code before replacing more parts.
- If the misfire moved after swapping coils between cylinders, the coil is confirmed faulty.
