🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Engine Appearance Cover

• Grip the engine cover near its mounting points and pull upward evenly by hand.
• Set the cover where its rubber mounting sockets cannot be damaged.
• Pull near each mounting point.

Step 2: Remove the Air Intake Duct

• Use a flat-blade screwdriver or 8mm socket to loosen the clamps at the throttle body and air-filter housing.
• Disconnect the ventilation hose from the intake duct by releasing its locking tabs by hand.
• Unplug any electrical connector attached to the duct by pressing its locking tab.
• Lift the duct out of the engine compartment.

Step 3: Disconnect Upper Intake Connections

• Use masking tape and a permanent marker to identify each electrical connector and hose.
• Press the locks by hand and unplug the throttle-body and manifold sensor connectors. Do not pull on the wires.
• Release the evaporative-emissions vapor-line connector by pressing its locking tabs. The evaporative-emissions system routes stored fuel vapor into the engine.
• Release the brake-booster vacuum hose and crankcase-ventilation hose from the manifold by hand or with needle-nose pliers, as appropriate.
• Use a plastic trim removal tool to release wiring-harness retainers from the manifold.
• Move the harness and hoses aside without sharply bending them.

Step 4: Remove the Upper Intake Manifold

• Use a 10mm socket, 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the upper intake manifold bolts gradually.
• Leave the throttle body attached to the manifold unless access requires otherwise.
• Confirm that every connector, hose, and harness retainer is free before lifting.
• Lift the manifold straight upward and remove it from the engine compartment.
• Immediately cover every exposed intake port with clean lint-free shop towels.
• The intake ports are openings leading directly into the engine. Nothing may fall into them.

Step 5: Clean the Work Area

• Use a shop vacuum with a narrow nozzle to remove loose dirt around the six ignition coils.
• Use a compressed-air blow gun while wearing safety glasses to clear debris from the coil recesses.
• Keep the intake ports covered throughout cleaning.

Step 6: Remove the Front Ignition Coils

• Press each front coil connector lock by hand and unplug the connector without pulling its wires.
• Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to remove each coil retaining bolt.
• Twist each coil gently by hand to release its rubber boot, then pull the coil straight upward.
• Inspect each recess for oil or coolant. Fluid around a coil indicates another leak that should be repaired before reassembly.

Step 7: Remove the Rear Ignition Coils

• Press each rear coil connector lock by hand and unplug the connector.
• Use a 10mm socket, 3-inch extension, and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to remove each retaining bolt.
• Twist each coil gently by hand, then pull it straight upward.
• Keep removed coils arranged by cylinder position if they may be tested or reused.

Step 8: Install the New Ignition Coils

• Compare each new coil with the removed coil before installation.
• Make sure each rubber boot and internal spring are properly seated in the new coil.
• Push each coil straight down by hand until its boot is fully seated on the spark plug.
• Install each retaining bolt by hand first.
• Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten every coil bolt to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
• Reconnect each coil connector until its lock clicks.
• Never use the bolt to pull a coil down.

Step 9: Replace the Intake Manifold Gaskets

• Remove the old upper intake manifold seals by hand.
• Use clean lint-free shop towels to wipe the manifold sealing grooves and mating surfaces.
• Do not use metal scrapers or allow cleaner to enter the intake ports.
• Install the new seals fully into their matching manifold grooves. Install them dry unless the gasket manufacturer specifically says otherwise.

Step 10: Reinstall the Upper Intake Manifold

• Count and remove all shop towels from the intake ports.
• Check each port with a flashlight before lowering the manifold into place.
• Lower the manifold straight down without shifting or pinching its seals.
• Start every manifold bolt several turns by hand.
• Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the bolts gradually in an inside-to-outside pattern to 25 Nm (18 ft-lbs).
• Do not use an impact wrench on the plastic manifold.

Step 11: Reconnect the Hoses and Wiring

• Reconnect the brake-booster hose, crankcase-ventilation hose, and evaporative-emissions vapor line by hand until each lock clicks.
• Reconnect the throttle-body and manifold sensor connectors by hand.
• Use a plastic trim removal tool to guide the wiring retainers into their original mounting locations.
• Compare the routing with the photograph taken before disassembly.

Step 12: Reinstall the Air Intake Duct

• Seat the intake duct completely over the throttle-body and air-filter housing lips.
• Use a flat-blade screwdriver or 8mm socket to tighten both clamps until secure. Do not overtighten the plastic duct.
• Reconnect the ventilation hose and any removed electrical connector by hand.

Step 13: Reconnect the Battery

• Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable in the trunk.
• Tighten the terminal clamp securely without crushing or twisting the battery post.
• Reinstall the trunk access trim by hand.

Step 14: Reinstall the Engine Cover

• Align the engine cover sockets with their mounting studs.
• Press directly above each mounting point by hand until the cover is fully seated.
