Replacing the ignition coils on your Edge is a straightforward repair. The coils sit on top of the engine and send high voltage to the spark plugs, so a weak coil can cause misfires, rough idle, poor acceleration, or a check engine light.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Edge on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Let the engine cool fully before starting.
  • Open the hood and make sure the ignition is OFF.
  • If you are replacing only one coil, mark the bad coil location before removal.
  • A torque wrench is a tool that tightens bolts to an exact tightness so plastic and aluminum parts are not damaged.
  • Dielectric grease is a non-conductive grease used inside the rubber boot to help seal out moisture.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal clamp.
  • Move the negative cable away from the battery post so it cannot spring back and touch.
  • Negative terminal usually has a minus symbol.

Step 2: Remove the Engine Appearance Cover

  • Grip the plastic engine cover with both hands and pull upward evenly.
  • If your cover uses fasteners, use an 8mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove them.
  • Set the cover aside where it will not be stepped on.

Step 3: Locate the Ignition Coils

  • Look across the top of the engine for four ignition coils.
  • Each coil has an electrical connector and one small retaining bolt.
  • If replacing one coil, match it to the cylinder that triggered the misfire code.
  • Replace one coil at a time to avoid mix-ups.

Step 4: Clean Around the Coil Area

  • Put on safety glasses.
  • Use a compressed air blow gun to blow dirt away from the top of each coil.
  • This helps keep debris from falling into the spark plug well after the coil is removed.

Step 5: Unplug the Ignition Coil Connector

  • Press the connector release tab by hand and pull the connector straight back.
  • If the tab is stuck, use a small flathead screwdriver gently to lift the lock tab.
  • Do not pry hard. The connector plastic can become brittle with age.

Step 6: Remove the Ignition Coil Bolt

  • Use an 8mm socket, 3-inch extension, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the coil retaining bolt.
  • Set the bolt in a safe place so it does not fall into the engine bay.

Step 7: Remove the Old Ignition Coil

  • Twist the ignition coil gently left and right by hand.
  • Pull the coil straight upward out of the spark plug well.
  • If it feels stuck, keep twisting gently while pulling upward.
  • Do not use force against the wiring.

Step 8: Prepare the New Ignition Coil

  • Compare the new coil to the old coil before installing it.
  • Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease inside the rubber boot opening.
  • Do not fill the boot with grease. A light film is enough.

Step 9: Install the New Ignition Coil

  • Push the new coil straight down into the spark plug well by hand.
  • You should feel the boot seat onto the spark plug.
  • Reinstall the coil bolt by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use an 8mm socket, 3-inch extension, and torque wrench inch-pound range to tighten the bolt.
  • Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs)

Step 10: Reconnect the Coil Connector

  • Push the electrical connector onto the ignition coil until it clicks.
  • Lightly tug the connector by hand to confirm it is locked.

Step 11: Repeat for Additional Coils

  • If replacing more than one coil, repeat Steps 5 through 10 for each coil.
  • Use the same 8mm socket, 3-inch extension, and torque wrench inch-pound range for each retaining bolt.
  • Torque each coil bolt to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs)

Step 12: Reinstall the Engine Cover

  • Place the engine cover back in position.
  • Press it down firmly by hand until it seats on its rubber mounts.
  • If fasteners were removed, use an 8mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to reinstall them snugly.

Step 13: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back on the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to tighten the clamp.
  • Do not overtighten the clamp.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your Edge and let it idle for 1-2 minutes.
  • ✅ Listen for smooth idle and confirm there is no shaking or misfire.
  • ✅ If the check engine light was on, clear the code with a scan tool or drive several trips after the repair to allow the system to retest.
  • ✅ Test drive gently first, then accelerate normally to confirm the hesitation or misfire is gone.
  • ✅ If the same cylinder misfire returns, inspect the spark plug, coil connector, and wiring next.
