📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your F-150 on level ground, select Park, apply the parking brake, and switch the ignition off.
- 🌡️ Allow the engine to cool for at least 30 minutes.
- 🧹 Clean loose dirt from around the top of the engine so it cannot fall into a spark-plug well.
- 📱 Save any radio presets you want to retain. Disconnecting the battery may reset the clock and some learned settings.
- 🔍 Label each coil connector if needed. The three coils on each side correspond to the three cylinders on that bank.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Put on the safety glasses and nitrile mechanic gloves.
- Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal clamp.
- Lift the negative cable from the battery post and position it where it cannot spring back into contact.
Step 2: Create Working Space
- Use an 8mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to loosen the clamps on the air-intake tube if it blocks access to the front coils.
- Disconnect any small hose attached to the intake tube by squeezing its release tabs by hand.
- Move the tube aside and cover its open end with a clean microfiber cloth.
- Do not disconnect fuel lines or remove the intake manifold. Neither is required for normal coil replacement on the 3.7L engine.
Step 3: Clean Around the Coils
- Use the compressed-air blower with regulated air supply to remove sand and dirt around each ignition coil.
- Keep your face away from the spark-plug wells and continue wearing safety glasses.
- Clean wells prevent debris from damaging plug threads.
Step 4: Disconnect the First Ignition Coil
- Press the electrical connector release tab and pull the connector straight away from the coil.
- If the connector has a separate locking tab, use a small flat-tip screwdriver to move the lock only far enough to release it.
- Do not pry against the wires. Replace any broken connector lock before operating the engine.
Step 5: Remove the First Ignition Coil
- Use an 8mm socket, 1/4-inch drive 3-inch extension, and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to remove the coil retaining bolt.
- For a rear coil with limited clearance, use the 1/4-inch drive 6-inch extension and universal joint.
- Rotate the coil gently by hand to release its rubber boot, then pull the coil straight upward.
- Inspect the removed coil for oil, water, cracking, or a burned contact spring. Fluid in the well indicates another leak that should be repaired.
Step 6: Install the Replacement Coil
- Compare the replacement coil with the removed coil. The connector, mounting ear, boot length, and spring position must match.
- Lower the new coil straight into the spark-plug well by hand.
- Press down firmly until the boot seats over the spark plug.
- Start the retaining bolt by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 8mm socket, appropriate extension, and inch-pound torque wrench to tighten the coil bolt to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
- Do not overtighten the bolt because the mounting area can crack.
Step 7: Reconnect the Coil
- Push the electrical connector onto the replacement coil by hand until the locking tab clicks.
- Gently pull on the connector housing to verify that it is secure.
- Do not pull on the wires during this check.
Step 8: Replace the Remaining Coils
- Repeat Steps 4 through 7 for each remaining coil being replaced.
- Work on one coil at a time so every connector returns to its original position.
- Use the 8mm socket, extensions, universal joint where required, and inch-pound torque wrench for each coil bolt.
- Tighten every coil retaining bolt to 7 Nm (62 lb-in).
Step 9: Reinstall the Air-Intake Tube
- Remove the clean microfiber cloth from the intake opening.
- Position the air-intake tube fully over both sealing connections.
- Reconnect any hose by hand until its fitting locks.
- Use the 8mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to tighten the intake clamps until secure. Do not crush the plastic tube.
Step 10: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative cable fully onto the battery post.
- Use the 10mm socket and inch-pound torque wrench to tighten the negative-terminal clamp to 5 Nm (44 lb-in).
- Confirm that the terminal cannot rotate by hand.
✅ After Repair
- 🚗 Start the engine and let it idle for two to three minutes.
- 👂 Listen for smooth, even operation. A shaking engine or flashing check-engine light indicates an active misfire; switch the engine off immediately.
- 🔍 Check that every coil connector and intake hose is fully secured.
- ⚠️ If the check-engine light remains on, read and clear stored misfire codes only after confirming the repair. A scan tool is not required for the physical replacement.
- 🕒 Reset the clock and restore radio presets if they were lost.
- 🛣️ Take a short, gentle road test and verify that acceleration is smooth with no warning lights.
