🔧 Outback - Ignition Coil Replacement

Replacing the ignition coils on your Outback helps fix misfires, rough running, poor acceleration, and flashing check engine light issues caused by weak coil output. The 2.5L flat-four engine uses one ignition coil per cylinder, mounted directly on top of each spark plug.

  • ⚠️ Work only on a cold engine. The exhaust and cylinder heads sit close to the coils and can burn you.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging ignition coils to reduce the risk of electrical shorts.
  • ⚠️ Do not pull on wiring. Always release the connector tab first, then pull the connector body.
  • ⚠️ If the check engine light is flashing, avoid driving until the misfire is fixed because it can damage the catalytic converter.
  • ⚠️ Keep dirt out of the spark plug wells. Dirt can fall into the engine if the spark plugs are removed later.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Outback on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • ❄️ Let the engine cool completely before reaching near the cylinder heads.
  • 🔋 Use a 10mm socket to loosen the negative battery terminal, then move the cable aside so it cannot spring back onto the post.
  • 🧠 If you have misfire codes, match the cylinder before replacing parts: cylinder 1 and 3 are on the passenger side, cylinder 2 and 4 are on the driver side.
  • 📘 A “coil-on-plug” ignition coil means each coil sits directly on one spark plug instead of using long spark plug wires.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open The Hood And Disconnect The Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal nut.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and wrap the end with a shop towel.
  • Black cable means negative.

Step 2: Remove The Engine Cover If Equipped

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the engine cover fasteners if your Outback has a plastic top cover.
  • Lift the cover straight up and set it aside.
  • If plastic clips are fitted, use a trim clip remover to lift them gently.

Step 3: Access The Passenger-Side Ignition Coils

  • The passenger-side coils are on the right side of the engine bay when standing in front of the vehicle.
  • Use compressed air nozzle to blow dust away from the coil area before removal.
  • If a hose or wire loom blocks your hand, use needle-nose pliers or a small flat-blade screwdriver to release the retaining clip carefully.
  • Move wiring gently, never force it.

Step 4: Unplug The Ignition Coil Connector

  • Use your finger to press the electrical connector release tab.
  • If the tab is stiff, use a small flat-blade screwdriver to lightly press the tab while pulling the connector body rearward.
  • Do not pry on the wires. Pull only on the plastic connector.

Step 5: Remove The Ignition Coil Bolt

  • Use a 10mm socket, 3-inch extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the coil retaining bolt.
  • Set the bolt in a safe place so it does not fall into the engine bay.
  • The coil retaining bolt is small, so loosen it slowly.

Step 6: Remove The Ignition Coil

  • Grip the ignition coil body by hand and twist it gently left and right.
  • Pull the coil straight out from the spark plug well.
  • If it feels stuck, keep twisting gently while pulling outward. Do not use a pry bar.
  • Use shop towels to wipe dirt from around the opening.

Step 7: Compare The Old And New Coil

  • Compare the new ignition coil to the old one by hand before installation.
  • Make sure the mounting tab, connector shape, and rubber boot length match.
  • Apply a small pea-sized amount of dielectric grease inside the rubber boot. Dielectric grease is a non-conductive silicone grease that helps seal moisture out.
  • Use very little grease.

Step 8: Install The New Ignition Coil

  • Push the new ignition coil straight into the spark plug well by hand.
  • You should feel the rubber boot seat over the spark plug.
  • Align the coil mounting tab with the bolt hole.

Step 9: Tighten The Ignition Coil Bolt

  • Start the coil bolt by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3-inch extension, and torque wrench to tighten the bolt.
  • Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs)
  • Do not overtighten. The bolt threads into aluminum and can strip.

Step 10: Reconnect The Coil Connector

  • Push the electrical connector onto the ignition coil by hand until it clicks.
  • Lightly tug the connector body to confirm it is locked.
  • If the connector does not click, inspect the lock tab with a small flat-blade screwdriver.

Step 11: Repeat For The Remaining Coils

  • Repeat Steps 3-10 for each ignition coil you are replacing.
  • Use a 10mm socket, extensions, and torque wrench for each coil bolt.
  • For driver-side coils, use the 6-inch 3/8-inch drive extension if more reach is needed.
  • Torque each coil bolt to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs)

Step 12: Reinstall Any Removed Covers Or Clips

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall the engine cover fasteners if removed.
  • Use your hands or trim clip remover to reinstall any plastic clips that were removed.
  • Make sure no tools, towels, or loose bolts are left in the engine bay.

Step 13: Reconnect The Battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to tighten the terminal nut snugly.
  • Do not overtighten the battery terminal.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start the engine and let it idle for 1-2 minutes.
  • ✅ Listen for smooth idle and check that the engine does not shake.
  • ✅ If you had a check engine light, use a scan tool to clear the misfire code after the repair.
  • ✅ Test drive gently for 10-15 minutes and confirm there is no hesitation or flashing check engine light.
  • ✅ Recheck all coil connectors after the test drive if the engine still runs rough.
