🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
- Use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch-drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal clamp.
- Lift the clamp from the negative post and position it where it cannot spring back into contact.
- Do not disconnect the positive terminal.
Step 2: Remove the Engine Cover
- Use the 10mm socket, 6-inch extension, and 1/4-inch-drive ratchet if retaining nuts are fitted.
- Lift the cover upward evenly to release its rubber grommets. A grommet is a rubber mount that holds the cover while reducing vibration.
- Use the plastic trim-removal tool only if a grommet needs gentle assistance. Do not lever against wiring or the valve cover.
- Place the cover and any retainers in a clean area.
Step 3: Clean Around the Coils
- Put on the safety glasses before using compressed air.
- Use the compressed-air blow gun to remove dirt from around all four ignition coils and spark-plug wells.
- Direct debris away from your face and electrical connectors.
- Clean wells prevent engine damage.
Step 4: Disconnect the First Ignition Coil
- Press the locking tab on the first coil connector with your fingers, then pull the connector straight back.
- Use the plastic trim-removal tool to press the tab gently if it is difficult to release.
- Do not pull on the wires, and do not pry aggressively because aged connector locks can break.
- Replace one coil at a time so the connectors remain correctly organized.
Step 5: Remove the First Coil
- Use the 10mm socket, 6-inch extension, and 1/4-inch-drive ratchet to remove the coil retaining bolt.
- Twist the coil gently by hand to free its rubber boot, then pull the coil straight upward.
- Inspect the spark-plug well for oil, water, or corrosion. Oil in the well indicates a sealing problem that should be repaired before installing the new coil.
Step 6: Prepare and Install the New Coil
- Confirm that the new coil matches the removed coil in connector shape, mounting position, and boot length.
- With a gloved fingertip, apply only a very thin film of dielectric silicone grease inside the lower rim of the rubber boot. Dielectric grease is an insulating silicone lubricant that helps keep moisture out.
- Do not pack grease into the metal contact or fill the boot.
- Push the coil straight down over the spark plug until it is fully seated.
- Start the retaining bolt several turns by hand to prevent cross-threading.
Step 7: Tighten and Connect the Coil
- Use the 10mm socket, 6-inch extension, and 1/4-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten the retaining bolt to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the small bolt because the cylinder-head threads can be damaged.
- Push the electrical connector onto the coil until its lock clicks.
- Pull back gently on the connector body to verify that it is latched.
Step 8: Replace the Remaining Coils
- Repeat Steps 4 through 7 for each remaining ignition coil.
- Use the same 10mm socket, 6-inch extension, 1/4-inch-drive ratchet, and torque wrench for every coil.
- Tighten every coil retaining bolt to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Verify that all four electrical connectors are fully locked.
Step 9: Reinstall the Engine Cover
- Align the engine cover with its rubber grommets and press it downward evenly by hand.
- If retaining nuts were removed, start them by hand and snug them lightly using the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch-drive ratchet. Do not crush or crack the plastic cover.
- Confirm that the cover does not trap any wiring.
Step 10: Reconnect the Battery
- Place the negative clamp fully onto the battery post.
- Use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch-drive torque wrench to tighten the clamp nut to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- Gently check that the clamp cannot rotate by hand.
Step 11: Start and Check the Engine
- Start the engine and let it idle while listening for smooth, even operation.
- If the malfunction indicator lamp remains on, connect the OBD-II scan tool and read the stored diagnostic codes.
- After confirming that the engine runs correctly, use the OBD-II scan tool to clear ignition misfire codes.
- Stop immediately if the malfunction indicator lamp flashes, which indicates an active misfire that can damage the catalytic converter.

- ✅ Confirm that the engine starts promptly and idles without shaking.
- 🔍 Recheck all four coil connectors and ensure no tools remain in the engine compartment.
- 🚗 Take a short, gentle road test and verify smooth acceleration.
- 💡 Scan again with the OBD-II scan tool if the warning light returns. A recurring misfire may be caused by a spark plug, injector, compression issue, wiring fault, or oil inside the plug well.
