๐Ÿ”ง Silverado 1500 - Ignition Coil Replacement

This is a straightforward repair. Each cylinder has its own ignition coil mounted above the valve cover, with a short spark-plug wire connecting it to the plug.

Replace only the diagnosed failed coil unless testing shows several weak coils. Match the replacement to the existing round or square coil style. The connector and mounting shape must agree.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes for one coil, 1-2 hours for all eight

Assumption: These instructions cover the stock two-bolt ignition-coil arrangement.

  • โš ๏ธ Let the engine cool completely. The exhaust manifolds sit close to the coils and can cause serious burns.
  • โšก Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging ignition components.
  • ๐Ÿ›‘ Never pull a spark-plug wire while the engine is running. Ignition voltage can cause a severe shock.
  • ๐Ÿ”Œ Pull connectors by their plastic bodies, never by their wires.
  • ๐Ÿงค Keep dirt from entering the spark-plug wire boots and electrical connectors.

The premium Hitachi two-bolt individual coil shown in the parts list is my single-coil pick, but compare its connector and body shape with the removed coil before installation. Mixing round and square supplier designs is where an easy job gets annoying.


๐Ÿ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Silverado on level ground, shift into Park, and apply the parking brake.
  • Allow the engine to cool for at least 30 minutes.
  • Open the hood and identify the coil being replaced. There are four coils along each valve cover.
  • If diagnosing a misfire, record the trouble code before disconnecting the battery. Codes P0301 through P0308 identify the affected cylinder.
  • Take a photo of the connectors and spark-plug wires before disassembly.

๐Ÿ”จ Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Disconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery-terminal clamp.
  • Lift the negative cable from the terminal and position it where it cannot spring back.

Step 2: Locate the Failed Ignition Coil

  • Stand beside the appropriate valve cover and locate the coil identified during diagnosis.
  • Follow its short spark-plug wire downward toward the side of the cylinder head.
  • If replacing every coil, work on one coil at a time so the wires and connectors cannot become mixed.

Step 3: Clean Around the Coil

  • Put on safety glasses.
  • Use the compressed-air blow gun to remove loose dust around the coil, connector, and spark-plug wire.
  • Keep the air nozzle several inches away from the connector seals.

Step 4: Remove the Spark-Plug Wire

  • Grip the rubber boot where the wire attaches to the ignition coil.
  • Twist the boot gently to release its seal, then pull it straight off.
  • Do not pull on the cable itself. Internal damage may not be visible.
  • Use the small plastic trim tool only if the boot needs gentle assistance. Do not use metal pliers.

Step 5: Disconnect the Electrical Connector

  • Slide or lift the connector lock if one is fitted.
  • Press the release tab and pull the connector straight away from the coil.
  • Use the small plastic trim tool to press a stubborn tab without breaking it.
  • Inspect the connector for green corrosion, melted plastic, loose terminals, or damaged wiring.

Step 6: Remove the Old Coil

  • Use the 10mm socket, 3-inch extension, and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to remove the two coil mounting bolts.
  • Support the coil while removing the final bolt.
  • Lift the coil away from its mounting bracket.

Step 7: Compare the Replacement Coil

  • Place the old and new coils side by side.
  • Confirm that the body shape, connector, terminal count, bolt spacing, and spark-plug-wire tower match.
  • Do not install the coil if the existing unit is round and the replacement is square, or vice versa.

Step 8: Install the New Coil

  • Position the replacement coil on its mounting bracket.
  • Start both mounting bolts by hand to prevent crossed threads.
  • Use the inch-pound torque wrench with the 10mm socket to tighten both bolts evenly.
  • Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
  • Small bolts need small torque.

Step 9: Reconnect the Wiring

  • Push the electrical connector onto the coil until its latch clicks.
  • Reinstall its locking tab if equipped.
  • Apply a very thin film of dielectric grease inside the spark-plug-wire boot. Dielectric grease is a silicone grease that keeps moisture away from electrical connections.
  • Push the boot firmly onto the coil tower until it is fully seated.

Step 10: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the terminal.
  • Use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to tighten the clamp securely.
  • Do not overtighten or distort the battery terminal.

โœ… After Repair

  • Start the engine and let it idle while listening for a steady, smooth rhythm.
  • Confirm that the check-engine light is not flashing. A flashing light means the engine is still misfiring and should be shut off.
  • Check that the coil connector and spark-plug wire remain fully seated.
  • Clear stored misfire codes with a compatible scan tool if available.
  • Drive for 10-15 minutes using light and moderate acceleration, then recheck for codes.
  • If the same cylinder still misfires, inspect its spark plug, plug wire, connector, injector, and compression before installing more coils.
