🔧 Tacoma - Ignition Coil Replacement

Replacing the ignition coils on your Tacoma is a straightforward job. The ignition coils sit on top of the spark plugs and create the high voltage needed to fire each plug.

If your Tacoma has a misfire, rough idle, poor acceleration, or a check engine light with a cylinder misfire code, replacing a weak coil can restore smooth running.

  • ⚠️ Let the engine cool completely before starting so you do not burn your hands.
  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition off and keep the key away from the vehicle while working.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging ignition coils to reduce the chance of electrical shorts.
  • ⚠️ Do not pull on wiring. Always press the connector tab and pull from the plastic connector body.
  • ⚠️ Work on one coil at a time if you are new, so nothing gets mixed up.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Tacoma on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 🧊 Let the engine cool fully before touching the coils.
  • 🔋 Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • 🧠 If you have a check engine light, note the misfire code first. P0301 means cylinder 1, P0302 means cylinder 2, P0303 means cylinder 3, and P0304 means cylinder 4.
  • 📍 Cylinder numbering on the 2.7L inline-4 runs from front to rear: cylinder 1 is at the front of the engine, closest to the radiator.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood and Locate the Ignition Coils

  • Use the hood release inside the cabin, then lift the hood and secure it with the prop rod.
  • The ignition coils are on top of the engine, lined up along the valve cover.
  • Each coil has one electrical connector and one small retaining bolt.
  • Take a photo before unplugging anything.

Step 2: Disconnect the Negative Battery Cable

  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the negative battery terminal nut.
  • Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
  • This helps protect the ignition circuit while you unplug the coils.

Step 3: Clean Around the Coil Area

  • Put on safety glasses before using compressed air.
  • Use a compressed air nozzle to blow dirt away from the top of the engine around the coils.
  • Use shop towels to wipe loose dust from the area.
  • This prevents dirt from falling into the spark plug tube when the coil is removed.

Step 4: Unplug the Ignition Coil Connector

  • Press the release tab on the coil connector with your finger or a plastic trim tool.
  • Pull the connector straight back from the coil body.
  • If the connector is stubborn, use needle-nose pliers gently on the connector body, not the wires.
  • A connector is the plastic electrical plug that snaps onto the coil.
  • Never pull by the wires.

Step 5: Remove the Ignition Coil Bolt

  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the coil retaining bolt.
  • Set the bolt somewhere safe so it does not fall into the engine bay.
  • The retaining bolt is the small bolt that holds the coil down against the valve cover.

Step 6: Remove the Old Ignition Coil

  • Grip the ignition coil firmly by the top.
  • Twist it slightly left and right to loosen the rubber boot.
  • Pull the coil straight upward out of the spark plug tube.
  • The rubber boot is the long rubber sleeve on the bottom of the coil that fits over the spark plug.
  • If it feels stuck, keep twisting gently while pulling upward.

Step 7: Inspect the Old Coil and Spark Plug Tube

  • Use a shop towel to inspect the coil boot for oil, coolant, cracks, burn marks, or swelling.
  • If there is oil in the spark plug tube, the valve cover tube seals may be leaking and should be repaired before installing new coils.
  • If the boot is burned or split, replace the coil.

Step 8: Prepare the New Ignition Coil

  • Apply a very small amount of dielectric grease inside the end of the new coil boot.
  • Dielectric grease is a non-conductive silicone grease that helps seal moisture out and makes future removal easier.
  • Do not pack the boot full of grease. A thin film is enough.
  • Too much grease can cause poor contact.

Step 9: Install the New Ignition Coil

  • Slide the new ignition coil straight down into the spark plug tube.
  • Push gently until you feel the boot seat onto the spark plug.
  • Align the coil mounting hole with the bolt hole in the valve cover.

Step 10: Tighten the Ignition Coil Bolt

  • Start the coil bolt by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 3/8-inch drive 6-inch extension, and torque wrench inch-pound range to tighten the bolt.
  • Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs)
  • Do not overtighten. The valve cover threads can be damaged.

Step 11: Reconnect the Coil Connector

  • Push the electrical connector onto the new coil until it clicks.
  • Gently tug the connector body by hand to make sure it is locked in place.
  • Repeat Steps 4-11 for any other ignition coils you are replacing.

Step 12: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery cable back onto the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to tighten the terminal nut snugly.
  • Do not overtighten the battery terminal.
  • Torque to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs)

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Start your Tacoma and let it idle for 1-2 minutes.
  • ✅ Listen for smooth idle and make sure the engine does not shake.
  • ✅ Check that all coil connectors are fully clicked into place.
  • ✅ If the check engine light was on, use a scan tool to clear the stored misfire code after the repair.
  • ✅ Road test gently for 10-15 minutes and confirm there is no hesitation or flashing check engine light.
  • ✅ If the same cylinder misfire returns, the spark plug, injector, wiring, or engine compression may need diagnosis.
