Replacing both headlight bulbs on your F-150 is a beginner-friendly job. The bulbs are accessed from behind the headlamp assemblies under the hood, so you do not normally need to remove the headlight housings.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood

• Use your hand to pull the hood release inside the cab.
• Use your hand to release the hood safety latch at the front of the hood.
• Raise the hood fully and make sure it is secure.
• Use a flashlight to look behind each headlight assembly.

Step 2: Locate the Bulb You Are Replacing

• Use the flashlight to identify the bulb sockets at the rear of the headlamp housing.
• The low beam bulb is the main bulb used for normal nighttime driving.
• The high beam bulb is the brighter bulb used when the high beams are switched on.
• A bulb socket is the plastic holder that locks the bulb into the headlight housing.

Step 3: Disconnect the Electrical Connector

• Use your fingers to press the locking tab on the electrical connector.
• Pull the connector straight back off the bulb.
• Do not pull on the wires.
• If the connector feels stuck, gently wiggle the plastic connector while pressing the tab.
• Pull the connector, not the wires.

Step 4: Remove the Old Bulb

• Use your gloved hand to grip the bulb socket.
• Turn the bulb counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
• Pull the bulb straight out of the headlamp housing.
• No torque spec applies; this bulb uses a twist-lock fitting.

Step 5: Install the New Bulb

• Use nitrile gloves to handle the new bulb.
• If the glass is touched by accident, use a clean microfiber cloth to wipe it clean.
• Line up the tabs on the new bulb with the slots in the headlamp housing.
• Push the bulb straight into the housing.
• Turn the bulb clockwise until it locks in place.
• No torque spec applies; hand-tighten only until locked.
• Do not force the bulb.

Step 6: Reconnect the Electrical Connector

• Use your hand to push the electrical connector onto the bulb.
• Listen or feel for the connector to click into place.
• Lightly tug the connector body to make sure it is locked.

Step 7: Repeat on the Other Side

• Use the same steps on the opposite headlight.
• Use the flashlight if access is tight.
• Replace bulbs in pairs so both headlights have the same brightness and color.

Step 8: Test the Headlights

• Use the headlight switch to turn on the low beams.
• Walk to the front of your F-150 and confirm both low beams work.
• Use the multifunction stalk to switch on the high beams.
• Confirm both high beams work if you replaced them.
• Turn the headlights off when finished.
