🔧 Wrangler - Headlight Bulb Replacement
Replacing both headlight bulbs on your Wrangler is a beginner-friendly job that is done from the front grille area. The grille needs to be removed so you can access the headlamp retaining rings and bulb connectors.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-45 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the headlight switch off and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool if the headlights were recently on.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of the new halogen bulbs with bare fingers. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not normally required for this bulb-only replacement.
- ⚠️ Replace both headlight bulbs together so brightness and color match side to side.

- Dielectric grease - Qty: 1
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Wrangler on level ground and set the parking brake.
- 💡 Make sure the headlight switch is in the OFF position.
- 🧤 Put on clean nitrile gloves before handling the new bulbs.
- 🧰 A trim removal tool is a plastic pry tool that helps remove clips without scratching paint or breaking the grille.
- 🔌 Dielectric grease is a non-conductive silicone grease that helps protect electrical connectors from moisture.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the hood
- Use your hand to release the hood latches on both sides of the hood.
- Lift the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod.
- Put on safety glasses before working around the grille clips.
Step 2: Remove the upper grille clips
- Use the flat trim removal tool to lift the center pin of each plastic push clip along the top of the grille.
- Once each center pin is raised, pull the whole clip out by hand.
- Set the clips on a microfiber towel so they do not roll away.
- Work slowly to avoid breaking clips.
Step 3: Release and remove the front grille
- Use both hands to gently pull the top of the grille forward.
- Use steady pressure to release the lower grille retaining clips from the body.
- Lift the grille away from your Wrangler and place it face-up on a microfiber towel.
- Do not yank the grille. The lower clips release with a firm straight pull.
Step 4: Remove the headlight retaining ring
- Choose one headlight to start with.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screws holding the metal headlight retaining ring.
- Hold the headlight with one hand as you remove the last screw so it does not fall forward.
- No torque spec is published for these small retaining-ring screws. Reinstall them snug only.
Step 5: Pull the headlight assembly forward
- Use both hands to carefully pull the headlight assembly forward just enough to reach the electrical connector.
- Do not pull hard on the wiring harness.
Step 6: Disconnect the old bulb
- Use your fingers to press the locking tab on the headlight connector.
- Pull the connector straight back off the bulb.
- If it feels stuck, gently wiggle the connector while pulling straight back.
- Do not pry the connector with a screwdriver because the plastic lock can break.
Step 7: Remove the old bulb
- Use your gloved hand to rotate the old H13 halogen headlight bulb counterclockwise.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the headlight housing.
- Inspect the bulb opening for dirt or moisture before installing the new bulb.
Step 8: Install the new bulb
- Use clean nitrile gloves to handle the new H13 halogen headlight bulb.
- Line up the tabs on the bulb with the slots in the headlight housing.
- Insert the bulb straight into the housing.
- Rotate the bulb clockwise until it locks in place.
- Never touch the bulb glass.
Step 9: Reconnect the wiring
- Apply a tiny amount of dielectric grease to the rubber seal area of the connector, not packed into the metal terminals.
- Push the electrical connector onto the bulb until the lock clicks.
- Gently tug the connector by hand to confirm it is fully seated.
Step 10: Reinstall the headlight assembly
- Position the headlight assembly back into the bucket.
- Install the metal retaining ring by hand first.
- Use the Phillips #2 screwdriver to tighten the retaining-ring screws evenly.
- Tighten the screws snug only. Do not overtighten because the small screws and headlight tabs can strip.
Step 11: Repeat on the other side
- Use the Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the retaining-ring screws on the opposite headlight.
- Repeat the same bulb removal, installation, connector, and retaining-ring steps.
- Replace both bulbs before reinstalling the grille.
Step 12: Test the headlights before reinstalling the grille
- Turn the key to the accessory position if needed.
- Use the headlight switch to turn on the low beams.
- Use the multifunction stalk to check high beams.
- Confirm both headlights work on low beam and high beam.
- Turn the headlights off after testing.
Step 13: Reinstall the front grille
- Line up the lower grille clips with their body openings.
- Use both hands to press the grille straight into place until the lower clips seat.
- Install the upper plastic push clips by hand.
- Press the center pins down flush using your thumb or the flat trim removal tool.
Step 14: Close the hood
- Remove the hood prop rod and lower the hood carefully.
- Secure both outer hood latches by hand.
- Check that the grille is fully seated and even across the front.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Turn on the low beams and high beams again to confirm both sides still work.
- ✅ At night, park about 25 feet from a wall and check that both beams appear level and even.
- ✅ If one beam looks much higher or lower, the headlight assembly may not be seated correctly.
- ✅ Dispose of old halogen bulbs safely. Do not leave broken glass where tires or hands can contact it.
