🔧 Optima - Front Windshield Wiper Replacement

Your Optima uses a 26-inch driver-side blade and an 18-inch passenger-side blade. Each blade attaches to a J-shaped wiper arm and can be replaced without removing any fasteners.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition off before lifting the wiper arms.
  • ⚠️ Never release a raised metal wiper arm without a blade attached; it can strike and crack the windshield.
  • ⚠️ Replace one blade at a time so the other arm remains safely lowered.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnection is not required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses with impact-rated lenses
  • Nitrile mechanic gloves
  • Thick microfiber towel (minimum 40cm x 40cm)

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front windshield wiper blade set with 9mm J-hook adapters - Driver: 26", Passenger: 18" - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • 📍 Park your Optima on level ground, shift into Park, engage the parking brake, and turn off the ignition.
  • 📍 Confirm the new blades are labeled 26 inches for the driver side and 18 inches for the passenger side.
  • 📍 Place a thick microfiber towel on the windshield beneath the blade being replaced.
  • 📍 A J-hook is the curved end of the metal wiper arm that holds the blade adapter.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the Driver-Side Wiper Arm

  • Put on the impact-rated safety glasses and nitrile mechanic gloves.
  • Use your hand to lift the driver-side wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays raised.
  • Position the thick microfiber towel directly below the raised arm.
  • No fasteners are removed, so no torque specification applies.

Step 2: Release the Driver-Side Blade

  • Use your hand to rotate the blade until it sits nearly perpendicular to the metal arm.
  • Press the small locking tab on the blade adapter with your thumb.
  • While holding the tab, slide the blade downward toward the base of the arm.
  • Guide the adapter around the curved J-hook and remove the blade.
  • Keep control of the bare arm at all times. Never let the metal arm snap down.

Step 3: Install the 26-Inch Driver Blade

  • Use your hand to guide the open slot of the new 26-inch blade adapter around the J-hook.
  • Pull the blade upward along the arm until the adapter clicks securely into place.
  • Gently tug the blade by hand to confirm that the locking tab is engaged.
  • Rotate the blade so its rubber edge faces the windshield.
  • Use both hands to lower the arm slowly onto the glass.

Step 4: Replace the Passenger-Side Blade

  • Use your hand to raise the passenger-side wiper arm and place the thick microfiber towel beneath it.
  • Rotate the old blade, press its locking tab, and slide it downward out of the J-hook.
  • Guide the new 18-inch blade adapter around the J-hook by hand.
  • Pull the blade upward until the adapter clicks into place.
  • Gently tug the blade to verify that it is locked, then lower the arm carefully.

Step 5: Check Blade Position

  • Use your hands to confirm both rubber wiping edges sit flat against the windshield.
  • Make sure the 26-inch blade is on the driver side and the 18-inch blade is on the passenger side.
  • Remove the thick microfiber towel before operating the wipers.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Turn the ignition on and spray windshield-washer fluid.
  • ✅ Run the wipers at low speed and confirm both blades move smoothly without touching each other or the windshield trim.
  • ✅ Check for streaking, skipping, rattling, or a loose adapter.
  • ✅ If a blade is loose, turn the ignition off and reinstall it until the locking tab clicks.
