🔧 Escape - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

Replacing the front windshield wiper blades on your Escape is a quick beginner repair. Worn blades can streak, chatter, or leave blind spots, especially during rain, so replacing them helps keep visibility safe.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition fully off before working near the windshield wipers.
  • ⚠️ Do not let the bare metal wiper arm snap back onto the glass; it can crack the windshield.
  • ⚠️ Replace both front wiper blades together for even wiping performance.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic gloves
  • Clean microfiber towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Driver: 28", Passenger: 28" - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Escape on level ground and shift into Park.
  • Turn the ignition off and remove the key or keep the key away from the vehicle.
  • Make sure the wiper switch is in the OFF position.
  • Place a clean microfiber towel on the lower windshield under the wiper arm area for protection.
  • A wiper arm is the metal arm that holds the rubber blade against the windshield.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the Driver-Side Wiper Arm

  • Use your gloved hand to carefully lift the driver-side wiper arm away from the windshield.
  • Stop when the arm holds itself upright.
  • Use the clean microfiber towel to protect the glass under the arm.
  • Keep one hand on the arm.

Step 2: Release the Old Driver-Side Blade

  • Use your fingers to press the small release tab on the center connector of the wiper blade.
  • A release tab is the small plastic button or latch that unlocks the blade from the arm.
  • Slide the blade down and away from the hooked end of the wiper arm.
  • Remove the old blade from the arm.
  • No torque spec applies; this part clips on by hand.

Step 3: Install the New Driver-Side Blade

  • Use your hands to line up the new 28" wiper blade connector with the hook on the wiper arm.
  • Slide the new blade into the hook until it clicks into place.
  • Gently pull the blade back the opposite direction to confirm it is locked.
  • No torque spec applies; the blade must click securely into place.
  • Listen for the click.

Step 4: Lower the Driver-Side Wiper Arm

  • Use your gloved hand to slowly lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield.
  • Do not drop the arm.
  • Remove the microfiber towel after the blade is resting safely on the glass.

Step 5: Replace the Passenger-Side Blade

  • Use your gloved hand to lift the passenger-side wiper arm away from the windshield.
  • Use the clean microfiber towel to protect the glass under the arm.
  • Use your fingers to press the release tab on the old passenger-side blade.
  • Slide the old blade down and away from the wiper arm hook.
  • Use your hands to slide the new 28" wiper blade into the hook until it clicks.
  • Gently pull on the blade to make sure it is locked.
  • Slowly lower the arm back onto the windshield.
  • No torque spec applies; this is a hand-installed clip-on part.

Step 6: Test the New Wiper Blades

  • Use the washer switch to spray washer fluid onto the windshield before running the wipers.
  • Turn the wipers on low speed and watch for smooth movement.
  • Confirm both blades wipe evenly without streaking, skipping, or hitting each other.
  • If a blade chatters, use a clean microfiber towel to wipe the rubber edge once.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Make sure both blades sit flat against the windshield.
  • ✅ Confirm the driver and passenger blades are fully locked to the arms.
  • ✅ Check washer fluid level if the spray is weak.
  • ✅ No scan tool, programming, or infotainment reset is required.
