🔧 Outback - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

This is a quick beginner-friendly repair that replaces both front wiper blades on your Outback. Fresh blades help prevent streaking, skipping, and poor visibility in rain or road spray.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition off before touching the wiper arms.
  • ⚠️ Do not let a bare metal wiper arm snap back onto the windshield; it can crack the glass.
  • ⚠️ Place a towel on the windshield while each blade is removed.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Microfiber towel
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your Outback on level ground.
  • Turn the ignition off and make sure the wiper switch is off.
  • Lift one wiper arm at a time away from the windshield.
  • Place a microfiber towel on the windshield under the raised arm.
  • A J-hook wiper arm is a curved hook-shaped end that locks into the blade’s center adapter.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the driver-side wiper arm

  • Use your hand with nitrile gloves to gently lift the driver-side wiper arm away from the windshield.
  • Place a microfiber towel on the glass under the arm.
  • Hold the arm steady while you work.
  • Tip: Never release a bare arm.

Step 2: Release the old driver-side blade

  • Use your thumb to press the small locking tab on the wiper blade adapter.
  • Slide the blade down toward the base of the wiper arm until it clears the J-hook.
  • Pull the blade away from the arm.
  • No torque spec applies; this is a hand-release part.

Step 3: Install the new driver-side blade

  • Use your hands with nitrile gloves to position the new 26-inch front wiper blade under the J-hook.
  • Slide the blade upward into the hook until it clicks into place.
  • Gently tug the blade downward to confirm it is locked.
  • No torque spec applies; this is a hand-installed part.

Step 4: Lower the driver-side wiper arm

  • Use your hand to hold the wiper arm securely.
  • Remove the microfiber towel from the windshield.
  • Slowly lower the wiper blade onto the glass.

Step 5: Replace the passenger-side blade

  • Use your hand with nitrile gloves to lift the passenger-side wiper arm.
  • Place the microfiber towel on the windshield under the arm.
  • Press the locking tab with your thumb.
  • Slide the old blade down and off the J-hook.
  • Install the new 17-inch front wiper blade by sliding it into the hook until it clicks.
  • Gently tug the blade to confirm it is locked.
  • Remove the microfiber towel and slowly lower the arm.

Step 6: Final seating check

  • Use your hand to check both wiper blades are centered on the arms.
  • Confirm both adapters are fully latched.
  • Make sure the rubber wiping edges sit flat on the windshield.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Turn the ignition on.
  • ✅ Spray windshield washer fluid and run the wipers on low speed.
  • ✅ Confirm both blades wipe smoothly without streaks, chatter, or hitting the windshield trim.
  • ✅ Turn the wipers off and make sure they park fully at the bottom of the windshield.
