🔧 Focus - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement
Replacing the front windshield wiper blades on your Focus is a quick beginner-friendly job. Worn blades can streak, chatter, or leave blind spots, especially in rain, so replacing both front blades together is the best practice.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Do not let the bare metal wiper arm snap back onto the windshield; it can crack the glass.
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition fully off before working around the wipers.
- ⚠️ Replace both front blades as a pair for even wiping performance.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Focus on level ground and turn the ignition off.
- Make sure the wiper switch is off before lifting the wiper arms.
- Place a clean microfiber towel on the lower windshield under each wiper arm. This protects the glass if an arm slips.
- A wiper arm is the metal arm that holds the rubber blade against the windshield.
- A locking tab is the small plastic latch that holds the blade onto the arm.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise the Driver-Side Wiper Arm
- Put on safety glasses and nitrile gloves.
- Use your hand to gently lift the driver-side wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays up.
- Use a clean microfiber towel on the windshield under the arm for protection.
- Lift slowly to avoid spring snap-back.
Step 2: Rotate the Old Wiper Blade
- Use your hand to rotate the old wiper blade away from the wiper arm.
- Look for the small plastic locking tab at the center connection point.
- The center connection is where the blade clips onto the hook-shaped end of the wiper arm.
Step 3: Release the Old Blade
- Use your thumb to press the locking tab inward.
- While holding the tab, use your other hand to slide the blade downward toward the base of the wiper arm.
- Once it clears the hook, pull the old blade off the arm.
- Do not release the bare wiper arm while the blade is removed.
Step 4: Install the New Driver-Side Blade
- Use your hand to line up the new 28" front wiper blade with the hook on the wiper arm.
- Slide the blade upward into the hook until the locking tab clicks into place.
- Gently tug the blade by hand to confirm it is locked.
- No torque spec applies because this blade clips on by hand.
- Listen for a clear click.
Step 5: Lower the Driver-Side Wiper Arm
- Use your hand to slowly lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield.
- Keep control of the arm the whole time.
- Remove the clean microfiber towel after the blade is resting on the glass.
Step 6: Replace the Passenger-Side Blade
- Repeat the same process on the passenger side using the second 28" front wiper blade.
- Use your hand to lift the passenger-side wiper arm.
- Use your thumb to press the locking tab on the old blade.
- Slide the old blade off, then slide the new blade into the hook until it clicks.
- Gently tug the new blade by hand to verify it is locked.
- Slowly lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield.
Step 7: Test the New Wiper Blades
- Use the windshield washer spray before running the wipers dry.
- Turn the ignition on and use the wiper stalk to run the wipers for a few passes.
- Check that both blades wipe smoothly with no streaking, skipping, or loose movement.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Confirm both blades are fully seated and locked onto the wiper arms.
- ✅ Clean the windshield with glass cleaner if the new blades streak at first.
- ✅ If one blade chatters, wipe the rubber edge with a damp microfiber towel.
- ✅ No scan tool, calibration, or infotainment reset is required.
