HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front wiper blades - Driver: 26", Passenger: 17" - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Outback on level ground and turn the ignition off.
- 💧 Make sure the windshield is clean so the new rubber edge is not dragged over dirt.
- 🧻 Place a clean microfiber towel on the windshield under the wiper arm area. This protects the glass if the arm slips.
- 🔎 A wiper arm is the metal arm attached to the vehicle. The wiper blade is the replaceable rubber-and-frame piece clipped to it.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift the driver-side wiper arm
- Use your hand to lift the driver-side wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays raised.
- Keep the clean microfiber towel between the arm and glass as protection.
- No torque spec applies because there are no bolts to tighten.
- Hold the arm the whole time.
Step 2: Rotate the old blade
- Use your hand to rotate the old wiper blade away from the wiper arm until it forms a “T” shape.
- Look for the small locking tab at the center of the blade where it hooks to the arm.
- The locking tab is a small plastic latch that keeps the blade from sliding off.
Step 3: Remove the driver-side blade
- Use your thumb to press the locking tab on the old blade.
- While pressing the tab, slide the blade down toward the base of the wiper arm.
- Once it clears the hook, pull the blade away from the arm by hand.
- Gently lower the bare arm onto the clean microfiber towel if you need both hands.
Step 4: Install the new driver-side blade
- Use your hand to slide the new 26" driver-side wiper blade into the hooked end of the wiper arm.
- Pull the blade upward into the hook until it clicks and locks.
- Lightly tug the blade by hand to confirm it is secure.
- A firm click means locked.
Step 5: Lower the driver-side wiper arm
- Use your hand to carefully lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield.
- Make sure the rubber blade sits flat against the glass.
Step 6: Replace the passenger-side blade
- Use your hand to lift the passenger-side wiper arm away from the windshield.
- Place the clean microfiber towel under the arm area.
- Rotate the old passenger-side blade into a “T” shape by hand.
- Press the locking tab with your thumb and slide the blade down out of the hook.
- Install the new 17" passenger-side wiper blade into the hook until it clicks.
- Lightly tug the blade by hand to confirm it is locked.
- Carefully lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield.
Step 7: Test the new wipers
- Use the washer switch to spray washer fluid on the windshield.
- Run the front wipers for a few passes.
- Check that both blades wipe smoothly without streaking, skipping, or chattering.
- If a blade skips, use a clean microfiber towel to wipe the rubber edge and windshield.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Confirm both wiper blades are fully clipped to the wiper arms.
- ✅ Make sure the driver and passenger blades are on the correct sides: 26" on driver side, 17" on passenger side.
- ✅ Remove the protective plastic strip from the rubber edge if your new blades came with one.
- ✅ Recheck washer fluid level if the spray is weak.
