📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Forester on level ground and make sure the windshield is clean.
- Turn the ignition off and remove the key.
- Lift each wiper arm gently away from the windshield until it stays raised.
- Place a clean microfiber towel on the windshield under each raised arm as extra protection.
- A J-hook is the curved end of the wiper arm that locks into the blade connector.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise the Driver Wiper Arm
- Use your gloved hand to lift the driver-side wiper arm away from the windshield.
- Place a clean microfiber towel on the glass below the arm.
- Hold the arm steady while you work so it cannot spring back.
- Always control the metal arm.
Step 2: Unlock the Old Driver Wiper Blade
- Use your fingers to find the small release tab where the blade connects to the wiper arm.
- Press the release tab with your thumb while holding the blade with your other hand.
- Slide the old blade down toward the base of the wiper arm to unhook it from the J-hook.
Step 3: Remove the Old Driver Wiper Blade
- Use your gloved hand to rotate the old blade slightly away from the arm.
- Pull the blade free from the J-hook.
- Do not release the bare wiper arm against the windshield.
- Set the old blade aside.
Step 4: Install the New Driver Wiper Blade
- Use your gloved hand to line up the new 26" driver blade with the J-hook on the wiper arm.
- Slide the blade connector into the hook until it clicks into place.
- Gently tug the blade downward by hand to confirm it is locked.
- A click means it is seated.
Step 5: Lower the Driver Wiper Arm
- Use your gloved hand to slowly lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield.
- Remove the microfiber towel only after the blade is safely resting on the glass.
Step 6: Replace the Passenger Wiper Blade
- Use your gloved hand to lift the passenger-side wiper arm away from the windshield.
- Place the clean microfiber towel under the raised arm.
- Press the release tab with your thumb.
- Slide the old blade down and out of the J-hook.
- Install the new 17" passenger blade by sliding it into the J-hook until it clicks.
- Gently tug the blade by hand to make sure it is locked.
- Slowly lower the arm back onto the windshield.
Step 7: Test the New Wipers
- Use the windshield washer switch on the wiper stalk to spray washer fluid onto the glass.
- Run the wipers on low speed and check that both blades wipe smoothly.
- If a blade skips or chatters, use a clean microfiber towel to wipe the rubber edge and windshield.
✅ After Repair
- Make sure both blades sit flat against the windshield.
- Check that the driver and passenger blades do not hit each other.
- Verify the wipers park correctly at the bottom of the windshield.
- Dispose of the old blades safely; the metal spine can be sharp.
