🔧 Highlander - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement
Replacing the front windshield wiper blades on your Highlander is a simple beginner-friendly job. Worn wipers can streak, chatter, or leave unsafe visibility in rain, so replace both front blades together.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition off before working near the wiper arms.
- ⚠️ Do not let a bare metal wiper arm snap back onto the windshield; it can crack the glass.
- ⚠️ Work on a dry, parked vehicle with the wipers in their normal resting position.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Safety glasses
- Clean microfiber towel
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front wiper blades - Driver: 26", Passenger: 20" - Qty: 2
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Highlander on level ground and turn the ignition off.
- 🧼 Use a clean microfiber towel to wipe dirt from the lower windshield area.
- 📌 Keep the new driver and passenger blades separate; the driver side blade is longer.
- 📖 A wiper arm is the metal arm attached to the vehicle; the wiper blade is the rubber-and-frame piece you are replacing.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift the Driver Side Wiper Arm
- Use your hands to gently lift the driver side wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays upright.
- Place a clean microfiber towel on the windshield under the lifted arm as a cushion.
- Never release the bare arm.
Step 2: Find the Blade Release Tab
- Use your fingers to locate the small plastic release tab where the blade connects to the hook-shaped end of the wiper arm.
- The hook-style connector is a curved metal end that holds the blade in place.
Step 3: Remove the Old Driver Side Blade
- Use your thumb to press the release tab while sliding the old blade downward toward the base of the wiper arm.
- Once it clears the hook, use your hands to pull the blade off the arm.
- Keep one hand on the wiper arm the whole time so it cannot spring back.
Step 4: Install the New Driver Side Blade
- Use your hands to slide the new 26" driver side wiper blade into the hook-shaped end of the wiper arm.
- Pull the blade upward into the hook until you hear or feel a click.
- Use your hands to gently tug the blade to confirm it is locked in place.
- No torque spec applies because this repair uses clip-on wiper blades with no bolts.
Step 5: Lower the Driver Side Wiper Arm
- Use your hands to carefully lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield.
- Remove the clean microfiber towel after the rubber blade is resting on the glass.
Step 6: Replace the Passenger Side Blade
- Use your hands to lift the passenger side wiper arm away from the windshield.
- Place the clean microfiber towel under the arm to protect the glass.
- Use your thumb to press the release tab on the old blade.
- Slide the old blade downward and off the hook-style wiper arm.
- Use your hands to install the new 20" passenger side blade by sliding it into the hook until it clicks.
- Use your hands to gently tug the blade to confirm it is secure.
- Carefully lower the arm back onto the windshield.
Step 7: Clean and Check Blade Position
- Use the clean microfiber towel to wipe the rubber edge of each new blade.
- Make sure both blades sit flat against the windshield and do not overlap or touch the body trim.
- A quick wipe helps prevent streaking.
✅ After Repair
- 💧 Spray windshield washer fluid and run the front wipers for a few passes.
- 👀 Check that both blades wipe smoothly with no skipping, streaking, or clicking.
- 🔁 If a blade chatters, turn the wipers off and make sure the blade is fully clicked into the hook.
- 🗑️ Dispose of the old blades safely; the metal frame can have sharp edges.
