🔧 Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

Your Explorer uses a simple hook-style blade connection on the front wipers. Replacing the blades restores clear visibility and is one of the easiest maintenance jobs you can do at home.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • Turn the ignition off and keep the wiper switch fully off before starting.
  • Keep the wiper arm under control when removing the blade; the bare arm can snap against the glass and crack the windshield.
  • Use a folded towel on the glass for extra protection if you are nervous about the arm moving.
  • No battery disconnect is required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Microfiber towel
  • Step stool
  • Gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blade set - Driver: 22", Passenger: 22" - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and turn the ignition off.
  • Make sure the wipers are parked at the bottom of the windshield.
  • Lift one wiper arm at a time so it stays under control.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the first wiper arm

  • Pull the driver-side wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays upright.
  • Place a microfiber towel on the glass under the arm for protection.
  • Keep a firm grip on the arm.

Step 2: Remove the old blade

  • Find the small release tab where the blade connects to the hook.
  • Press the tab with your fingers and slide the blade downward to unhook it.
  • If it sticks, wiggle the blade gently while pulling it off.

Step 3: Install the new blade

  • Align the new blade adapter with the hook on the wiper arm.
  • Slide the blade up into place until it clicks securely.
  • Give it a light tug to make sure it is locked on.

Step 4: Lower the first arm carefully

  • Set the arm back against the windshield slowly.
  • Do not let it snap down.

Step 5: Replace the second blade

  • Repeat the same steps on the passenger-side wiper arm.
  • Make sure the replacement blade matches the correct side and length.

Step 6: Test the new wipers

  • Turn the ignition on and spray washer fluid.
  • Run the wipers through one full cycle.
  • Check that both blades sweep smoothly and do not chatter or leave streaks.

✅ After Repair

  • Wipe the windshield clean so you can confirm the blades are working well.
  • If the new blades streak, make sure they are fully seated on the arm.
  • Replace wiper blades in pairs for even performance.
