🔧 CX-9 - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

Replacing the front wiper blades restores clear visibility in rain and reduces streaking and chatter. On your CX-9, the blades attach to the wiper arms with a simple locking connector, so this is a quick DIY job.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the hinge while lifting the wiper arm.
  • ⚠️ Do not let the wiper arm snap onto the glass—place a towel on the windshield as protection.
  • ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF so the wipers can’t move unexpectedly.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Microfiber towel
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Driver: 26", Passenger: 18" - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
  • Place a microfiber towel on the lower windshield area under the wiper arms.
  • Uncommon term: the connector is typically a J-hook style (a hook-shaped end of the wiper arm that the blade slides onto).

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and support the wiper arm

  • Use your hands to lift the driver-side wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays up.
  • Keep the microfiber towel in place in case the arm drops.

Step 2: Unlock the old wiper blade

  • Rotate the wiper blade so you can see the connector where it meets the arm.
  • Press the small locking tab on the connector with your fingers.
  • If the tab is stubborn, gently help it with a small flathead screwdriver (don’t pry hard).

Step 3: Slide the old blade off the arm

  • While holding the lock tab pressed, slide the blade down and off the hook.
  • Set the old blade aside.

Step 4: Install the new blade

  • Remove the new blade from its packaging.
  • If your new blade includes multiple adapters, choose the one that matches the factory connector (most commonly J-hook).
  • Slide the new blade onto the hook until you hear/feel a click.
  • Give the blade a gentle tug to confirm it’s locked.
  • Tip: “Click + tug test” prevents fly-off.

Step 5: Lower the arm carefully

  • Use your hand to lower the wiper arm back onto the windshield slowly.
  • Remove the microfiber towel.

Step 6: Repeat on the passenger side

  • Repeat Steps 1–5 for the passenger-side blade.
  • Make sure the passenger blade length is 18" and the driver blade is 26".

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the ignition ON and run the washers for a few seconds.
  • Verify both blades wipe smoothly with no skipping, streaks, or unusual noises.
  • If there’s chatter, clean the windshield with glass cleaner and a microfiber towel.
