🔧 Tucson - Front Wiper Blade Replacement
Replacing the front wiper blades on your Tucson is a quick maintenance job that restores clear visibility in rain and helps prevent windshield scratching from worn rubber.
You’ll put the wiper arms into a safe “service position,” remove the old blades from the arm hooks, and snap the new blades on.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of the wiper arm hinge; it can pinch.
- ⚠️ Do not let a bare wiper arm snap onto the glass; it can crack the windshield. Use a microfiber towel as a cushion.
- ⚠️ Turn ignition off before handling the wipers so they don’t move unexpectedly.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Nitrile gloves
- Safety glasses
- Microfiber towel
- Plastic trim tool set
- Needle-nose pliers
🔩 Required Parts
HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:
- Front wiper blades - Driver: 26", Passenger: 16" - Qty: 2
đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
- Lay a microfiber towel at the base of the windshield where the arms could touch. Prevents chips if an arm drops.
- Assumption: Your Tucson uses a common J-hook style wiper arm connection (most do). The new blades typically include adapters.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Put the wipers in “service position”
- Use your nitrile gloves and safety glasses for grip and eye protection.
- Turn ignition ON, then turn ignition OFF.
- Within about 20 seconds, move the wiper stalk to MIST (one quick upward “single wipe” position) and hold for ~2 seconds until the wipers move up and stop where you can access them.
- If they don’t move, repeat the ignition ON > OFF sequence and try again.
Step 2: Lift one wiper arm safely
- Use a microfiber towel to protect the glass, then lift the wiper arm up off the windshield until it stays up.
- Keep one hand on the arm while you work so it can’t snap back down.
Step 3: Remove the old wiper blade from the arm
- Use your plastic trim tool set to gently press any locking tab on the blade connector (a locking tab is a small plastic latch that prevents accidental release).
- Slide the blade down toward the base of the arm to unhook it from the J-hook.
- If it’s stuck, use needle-nose pliers to help compress the tab while sliding the blade off (don’t crush the plastic).
Step 4: Install the new wiper blade
- Use your nitrile gloves to keep oils off the rubber wiping edge.
- Confirm you have the correct blade for that side: driver is 26", passenger is 16".
- Slide the new blade’s adapter onto the J-hook until it clicks/locks into place.
- Gently tug the blade using the microfiber towel for grip to confirm it’s fully latched.
Step 5: Lower the arm carefully and repeat on the other side
- Use the microfiber towel as a buffer and slowly lower the arm back onto the windshield.
- Repeat Steps 2–4 for the other front wiper.
Step 6: Return wipers to normal position
- Remove the microfiber towel from the windshield.
- Turn ignition ON and briefly operate the wipers with washer fluid to confirm smooth operation and no chatter.
âś… After Repair
- Test the wipers at LOW speed and HIGH speed, then test the washer spray.
- Listen for any clicking (usually means the blade isn’t fully latched).
- Wipe the windshield with glass cleaner and a microfiber towel if the new blades streak. Dirty glass causes most “new blade” streaks.
