🔧 Suburban - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

Your front wiper blades wear out over time and start streaking, chattering, or leaving spots you can’t see through. Replacing them is quick and helps visibility and safety in rain or dust.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours

Assumption: Your Suburban uses standard hook-style front wiper arms; most use 22" driver and 22" passenger.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Keep a firm grip on the wiper arm—its spring can snap back and crack the windshield.
  • ⚠️ Do not run the wipers on a dry windshield; it can scratch the glass.
  • ⚠️ Turn ignition OFF before lifting wiper arms.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Painter’s tape 1 in
  • Small flathead screwdriver 3mm
  • Shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Driver: 22", Passenger: 22" - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground, shift to Park, and turn the ignition OFF.
  • Use a shop towel to wipe dirt off the windshield where the blades sit.
  • Apply painter’s tape 1 in on the windshield under each blade as a “landing pad” if the arm slips.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift the wiper arm safely

  • Put on nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Lift one wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays up by itself.
  • Hold the arm the whole time.

Step 2: Remove the old wiper blade

  • At the center where the blade meets the arm, locate the small locking tab.
  • Press the tab with your thumb; if it’s stubborn, gently help it with a small flathead screwdriver 3mm.
  • Slide the wiper blade downward (toward the base of the arm) to unhook it from the arm.
  • Set the old blade aside.

Step 3: Install the new wiper blade

  • Match the new blade to the old one for length before installing.
  • Hook the new blade adapter into the wiper arm hook.
  • Slide it upward until you hear/feel a “click” (that’s the lock engaging).
  • Gently tug the blade to confirm it’s locked in place.

Step 4: Lower the wiper arm carefully

  • Lower the arm back onto the windshield slowly and gently.
  • Remove the painter’s tape 1 in.
  • Repeat Steps 1–4 for the other front wiper blade.

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the ignition ON, spray washer fluid, and run the front wipers on LOW for 10–15 seconds.
  • Confirm there’s no streaking and the blades don’t hit the trim.
  • If you hear chattering, clean the glass with washer fluid and wipe the blade rubber with a shop towel.
