🔧 Escape - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

You’ll remove the old front wiper blades from the wiper arms and click new blades on. New blades restore clear vision in rain and reduce streaking and windshield scratching.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.25-0.5 hours

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Keep fingers clear of hinge points on the wiper arms.
  • ⚠️ Don’t let a bare wiper arm snap onto the windshield; it can crack the glass.
  • ⚠️ Put a towel on the lower windshield/cowl while swapping blades.
  • ⚠️ Ignition OFF before lifting the wiper arms.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Microfiber towel
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front wiper blades - Match existing blade lengths (printed on old blades or measure) - Qty: 2

đź“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Escape on level ground and turn the ignition OFF.
  • Move the wipers into “service position” so the arms are easier to lift: turn ignition ON, then OFF, then within 3 seconds tap the wiper stalk to a single wipe. The wipers should stop partway up the windshield.
  • Lay a microfiber towel at the base of the windshield as a safety cushion.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Lift and support the wiper arm

  • Use a microfiber towel to protect the glass where you’ll work.
  • Lift the wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays up. If it won’t stay up, hold it gently with one hand while removing the blade.

Step 2: Identify your blade attachment style

  • Look where the blade connects to the arm and choose the matching removal method below.
  • If it feels stuck, don’t force it. Use a small flathead screwdriver only to gently help release a locking tab.

Step 3A: Remove the blade (J-hook style arm)

  • Rotate the blade so it’s roughly perpendicular to the arm.
  • Press the small lock tab on the adapter (use your thumb; if needed, gently assist with a small flathead screwdriver).
  • Slide the blade down toward the base of the hook, then angle it out and off the hook.

Step 3B: Remove the blade (Top-lock / pinch-tab style arm)

  • Locate the release tab/button on the top or sides of the blade connector.
  • Press the tab(s) in (use your fingers; if needed, gently assist with a small flathead screwdriver).
  • While holding the tab(s), slide the blade straight off the end of the arm.

Step 4: Install the new blade

  • Compare the new blade to the old one for length and connector style before installing.
  • Slide/click the new blade onto the arm until you hear/feel a positive “click.”
  • Gently tug on the blade to confirm it’s locked in place.

Step 5: Lower the arm safely

  • Use your hand to guide the arm down onto the windshield—do not let it drop.
  • Repeat Steps 1–5 for the other front wiper blade.

âś… After Repair

  • Remove the microfiber towel from the windshield/cowl area.
  • Turn ignition ON and run the wipers with washer fluid to confirm smooth operation and no streaking.
  • If a blade chatters, clean the windshield edge-to-edge and re-check that the blade is fully clicked in.
