🔧 Avalon - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement
The front wiper blades attach to the arms with Toyota’s standard hook-style connectors. Replace both blades together if they streak, chatter, split, or leave parts of the windshield wet.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Do not let a bare metal wiper arm snap against the windshield; it can crack the glass.
- 🛑 Keep the vehicle switched off so the wipers cannot move unexpectedly.
- 🧤 Wear gloves because worn blade edges may contain sharp metal strips.
- 🔋 Battery disconnection is not required.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Microfiber towel (minimum 16 x 16-inch)
- Nitrile gloves (mechanic-grade)
- Safety glasses (ANSI Z87.1-rated)

Replace in pairs. Choose blades supplied with compatible J-hook adapters.
📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park your Avalon on level ground, shift into Park, engage the parking brake, and switch the ignition off.
- 🧼 Clean loose dirt from the lower windshield so it cannot scratch the glass.
- 📏 Compare each new blade with the blade on the same side before installation; the longer 26-inch blade belongs on the driver side.
- 🖥️ No infotainment setting, scan tool command, or wiper service mode is required.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Protect the windshield
- Put on the ANSI Z87.1-rated safety glasses and mechanic-grade nitrile gloves.
- Place the 16 x 16-inch microfiber towel on the windshield beneath the driver-side blade.
- The towel cushions the glass if the metal arm slips.
Step 2: Raise the driver-side wiper arm
- Using your gloved hand, lift the driver-side wiper arm away from the windshield until it remains raised.
- Hold the arm securely while handling the blade.
- Replace one blade at a time.
Step 3: Release the old driver-side blade
- Rotate the blade so it sits nearly perpendicular to the wiper arm.
- Find the small locking tab where the blade meets the curved arm hook.
- Use your gloved thumb to press the locking tab.
- While holding the tab, slide the blade downward toward the base of the arm until it clears the J-hook. A J-hook is the curved end of the metal wiper arm.
- Carefully remove the blade while keeping control of the bare arm.
Step 4: Install the new driver-side blade
- Confirm that the 26-inch wiper blade has its J-hook adapter fitted and fully closed.
- Using your gloved hands, feed the arm’s curved hook through the adapter opening.
- Slide the blade upward into the hook until the locking tab clicks.
- Pull gently downward on the blade to verify that it is locked.
- Rotate the blade until it lies flat against the arm.
Step 5: Lower the driver-side arm
- Use one gloved hand to support the metal arm and the other to guide the blade.
- Lower the blade slowly onto the 16 x 16-inch microfiber towel.
- Remove the towel only after the blade rests safely against the windshield.
Step 6: Replace the passenger-side blade
- Place the 16 x 16-inch microfiber towel beneath the passenger-side blade.
- Using your gloved hand, lift the passenger-side arm away from the glass.
- Press the adapter’s locking tab and slide the old blade downward out of the J-hook.
- Fit the 18-inch wiper blade into the hook and slide it upward until it clicks.
- Pull gently on the blade to confirm that the lock is engaged.
- Use your gloved hands to lower the arm slowly onto the windshield, then remove the towel.
Step 7: Inspect both installations
- Using your gloved hands, verify that both blades sit flat and face the same direction as the removed blades.
- Check that neither adapter is loose or partially open.
- Remove any protective plastic covers from the rubber wiping edges.
✅ After Repair
- 💧 Apply windshield-washer fluid and operate the wipers at low speed.
- 👀 Confirm that both blades move smoothly without striking each other, the windshield trim, or the hood.
- 🧼 Check for streaks or missed areas. If present, switch the ignition off and verify that each adapter is completely locked.
- ♻️ Recycle the old blades where local metal or automotive-parts recycling is available.
