🔧 4Runner - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

Replacing the front wiper blades restores clear visibility and prevents worn rubber from scratching the windshield. Your 4Runner uses a 24-inch driver-side blade and a 20-inch passenger-side blade with standard J-hook attachments.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-15 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Do not let a raised wiper arm snap against the windshield; the bare metal arm can crack the glass.
  • 🧤 Wear work gloves because the blade frame and wiper arm may have sharp edges.
  • 🔋 Battery disconnection and electronic service mode are not required.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Medium microfiber towel
  • Work gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Front J-hook wiper blade - Driver: 24" - Qty: 1
  • Front J-hook wiper blade - Passenger: 20" - Qty: 1

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚙 Park your 4Runner on level ground, turn off the ignition, and engage the parking brake.
  • 📏 Match each new blade to the correct side before removing the old blades.
  • 🧼 Clean dirt from the lower windshield with the medium microfiber towel.
  • 🛡️ Place the medium microfiber towel on the glass beneath the first wiper arm.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Raise the Driver-Side Wiper Arm

  • Put on the work gloves and safety glasses.
  • Use your hand to lift the driver-side wiper arm away from the windshield until it remains raised.
  • Keep the medium microfiber towel between the metal arm and the windshield.
  • Replace one blade at a time.

Step 2: Rotate the Driver-Side Blade

  • Use your hand to rotate the blade until it sits nearly perpendicular to the wiper arm.
  • Locate the small locking tab where the blade connects to the curved end of the arm.
  • The curved end is called a J-hook because it is shaped like the letter J.

Step 3: Remove the Driver-Side Blade

  • Use your thumb to press the locking tab on the blade adapter.
  • While holding the tab, use your other hand to slide the blade downward toward the base of the wiper arm.
  • Move the blade around the open end of the J-hook and remove it.
  • Carefully rest the bare arm on the medium microfiber towel. Never place it directly against the glass.

Step 4: Install the 24-Inch Driver Blade

  • Use your hands to orient the new 24-inch blade so its adapter opening faces the J-hook.
  • Pass the hook through the adapter opening, then pull the blade upward into the hook.
  • Continue pulling until the locking tab clicks into place.
  • Use your hands to tug the blade gently downward. It must remain securely locked.
  • No fasteners or torque specifications apply to this snap-fit connection.

Step 5: Lower the Driver-Side Wiper

  • Use one hand to support the wiper arm while removing the medium microfiber towel with the other hand.
  • Slowly lower the blade onto the windshield. Do not release the arm from the raised position.

Step 6: Replace the Passenger-Side Blade

  • Place the medium microfiber towel beneath the passenger-side wiper arm.
  • Use your hand to lift the arm, rotate the old blade, and press its locking tab.
  • Slide the old blade downward and remove it from the J-hook.
  • Use your hands to install the new 20-inch blade, pulling it into the hook until it clicks.
  • Tug the blade gently to verify it is locked, then slowly lower the arm onto the windshield.

Step 7: Check Blade Position

  • Use your hands to confirm both rubber wiping edges lie flat against the windshield.
  • Verify the 24-inch blade is on the driver side and the 20-inch blade is on the passenger side.
  • Remove the medium microfiber towel and any blade protectors or packaging.

✅ After Repair

  • 💧 Start your 4Runner and spray windshield-washer fluid.
  • 👀 Operate the wipers through several cycles and verify they move smoothly without striking each other or the windshield trim.
  • 🧽 If a new blade streaks, switch off the wipers and clean its rubber edge with the medium microfiber towel.
  • ♻️ Recycle the old blades where metal-and-rubber recycling is available.
