🔧 Malibu - Front Wiper Blade Replacement
Replacing the front wiper blades restores clear visibility in rain and prevents streaking or skipping. On your Malibu, the blades attach to the wiper arms with a common “J-hook” style connector, so it’s a quick DIY job.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.2-0.5 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition OFF and remove the key before working near the wipers.
- ⚠️ Don’t let a bare wiper arm snap onto the windshield; it can crack the glass.
- ⚠️ Lift the wiper arm gently and support it while swapping the blade.
- ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this repair.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Make sure the wipers are in their “parked” (down) position at the bottom of the windshield.
- Place a clean shop towel on the lower windshield area as a cushion.
- Add a small strip of painter’s tape on the glass to mark where each blade sits. Helps you confirm alignment.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift the driver-side wiper arm
- Use your hands (wear nitrile gloves) to lift the driver wiper arm away from the windshield until it stays up.
- Keep the clean shop towel on the glass below the arm for protection.
Step 2: Remove the old driver-side wiper blade (J-hook)
- Hold the wiper arm with one hand so it can’t snap back.
- With your other hand, rotate the wiper blade so it’s roughly perpendicular to the arm.
- Press the small release tab on the blade connector (near where it meets the arm), then slide the blade down and out of the “J” hook.
- If it’s stuck, wiggle while pressing the tab.
Step 3: Install the new driver-side wiper blade
- Unbox the new 22" wiper blade and confirm it includes the J-hook adapter already installed (most do).
- Slide the new blade’s connector into the wiper arm’s J-hook opening.
- Pull it upward until you hear/feel a “click” and it won’t slide back out.
- Gently tug the blade to confirm it’s locked onto the arm.
Step 4: Lower the driver-side wiper arm safely
- Use your hand to guide the arm down to the windshield—do not let it drop.
- Remove any painter’s tape you used as a marker if desired.
Step 5: Repeat for the passenger side
- Repeat Steps 1–4 for the passenger side using the 18" wiper blade.
- Use the clean shop towel again to protect the glass while the arm is raised.
âś… After Repair
- Spray washer fluid (or clean water) on the windshield and run the wipers for 10–15 seconds.
- Confirm both blades wipe smoothly with no chatter, skipping, or streaks.
- If one blade streaks, lift that arm and re-check that the connector is fully clicked in.
