🔧 Explorer - Front Windshield Wiper Blade Replacement

Your A4—

Your Explorer’s front wiper blades slide off the wiper arms and new ones clip on. Replacing them restores clear visibility and prevents the old rubber from streaking or scratching the windshield.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 10-20 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Wiper arms are spring-loaded—hold them firmly so they don’t snap onto the glass.
  • ⚠️ Put a towel on the windshield where the arm could hit to help prevent cracks or chips.
  • ⚠️ Do not turn the wipers on while blades are removed.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this job.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Safety glasses
  • Mechanic’s gloves
  • Clean shop towel

🔩 Required Parts

  • Front wiper blades - Driver: 20", Passenger: 20" - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park on level ground and turn the ignition off.
  • Lift each front wiper arm up away from the windshield.
  • Place a clean shop towel on the windshield under the wiper arm as a cushion.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the old wiper blade (one side)

  • Put on safety glasses and mechanic’s gloves.
  • Lift the wiper arm up and keep one hand holding it.
  • At the blade connection, find the small release tab where the blade clips to the arm.
  • Press the tab with your thumb (or while wearing mechanic’s gloves), then slide the blade down and off the hook.
  • Keep the arm controlled the whole time.

Step 2: Install the new wiper blade

  • Compare the new blade to the old one to ensure the same length.
  • Line up the new blade’s connector with the hook on the wiper arm.
  • Slide/clip it into place until you hear or feel a “click.”
  • Gently tug the blade to confirm it’s locked on.

Step 3: Repeat on the other side

  • Use the same process to remove and install the other front blade.
  • Keep the clean shop towel under the arm while working.

Step 4: Set the arms back down

  • Remove the clean shop towel.
  • Lower each wiper arm back onto the windshield gently (don’t let it drop).

✅ After Repair

  • Start the engine and lightly spray washer fluid.
  • Run the wipers on low speed and check for streaking, skipping, or chatter.
  • If a blade chatters, clean the windshield and blade rubber with a damp towel, then re-test.
