🔧 1500 - Front Window Regulator Replacement

This repair replaces the front door window regulator, which is the scissor/cable mechanism that moves the glass up and down. On your 1500, the front regulator is serviced from inside the door after removing the interior door trim panel and carefully supporting the glass.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Disconnect the 12V battery negative cable before unplugging door electrical connectors.
  • ⚠️ Your 1500 uses an eTorque mild-hybrid system, but this front door repair does not require high-voltage service if you only work inside the door.
  • ⚠️ Support the window glass before removing the regulator. Loose glass can drop suddenly and break.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves because the inside of the door has sharp metal edges.
  • ⚠️ Do not turn the ignition on while door modules or switches are unplugged. This can set fault codes.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your 1500 on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Lower the front window halfway if the regulator still moves. This gives access to the glass retaining bolts.
  • If the window will not move, you can still do the repair, but you may need to manually slide the glass after the door panel is removed.
  • Open the hood and disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket. Wait 2 minutes before unplugging door connectors.
  • A trim removal tool is a plastic pry tool that helps remove panels without scratching them.
  • Butyl sealing tape is a sticky black sealant used to reseal the plastic moisture barrier inside the door.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Front Door Switch Panel

  • Use a plastic wedge tool or trim removal tool to gently pry up the power window switch panel from the armrest.
  • Lift the panel just enough to access the connectors underneath.
  • Use your fingers or a flat-blade screwdriver to press the connector locking tabs, then unplug the switch panel.
  • Set the switch panel somewhere safe so it does not get scratched.
  • Tip: Pry slowly to avoid broken tabs.

Step 2: Remove Hidden Door Panel Fasteners

  • Use a trim removal tool to remove any small covers inside the pull handle or behind trim plugs.
  • Use a 7mm socket or 8mm socket to remove the visible door panel screws.
  • Use a Phillips screwdriver if your door has Phillips-head screws installed in trim locations.
  • Keep all screws in a cup or tray so none are lost.

Step 3: Release the Door Trim Panel Clips

  • Start at the lower rear corner of the door panel.
  • Use a trim removal tool to pop the panel clips loose one at a time.
  • Work around the bottom and sides of the panel.
  • Once the clips are loose, lift the door panel upward to release it from the top window ledge.
  • Do not pull the panel far away yet. Cables and connectors may still be attached.

Step 4: Disconnect the Door Handle Cable and Electrical Connectors

  • Use needle-nose pliers to carefully release the inside door handle cable from the handle lever.
  • Unplug any remaining electrical connectors by pressing their locking tabs with your fingers or a flat-blade screwdriver.
  • Remove the door trim panel and place it on a clean blanket or cardboard.

Step 5: Peel Back the Moisture Barrier

  • Use your hands and a plastic wedge tool to slowly peel back the plastic moisture barrier.
  • Try to keep the black butyl sealant attached to the plastic.
  • Do not tear the barrier. It prevents water from entering the cabin.
  • If the butyl seal stretches or becomes dirty, plan to replace it with butyl sealing tape.

Step 6: Support the Window Glass

  • Use painter’s tape to tape the window glass to the upper door frame.
  • Apply several long strips from the outside of the glass, over the top of the door frame, and onto the inside of the glass.
  • If the glass is loose, use both hands with work gloves to raise it fully before taping.
  • Tip: Use more tape than you think.

Step 7: Detach the Glass from the Regulator

  • Look through the door access openings to find the glass clamp or glass retaining bolts.
  • Use a 10mm socket with a 6-inch extension to loosen the glass retaining bolts.
  • Do not fully remove the glass unless necessary.
  • Make sure the glass stays taped securely in the fully raised position.
  • On reassembly, tighten the glass retaining bolts to Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).

Step 8: Disconnect the Window Motor Connector

  • Find the electrical connector on the window motor attached to the regulator assembly.
  • Use your fingers or a flat-blade screwdriver to press the connector lock.
  • Unplug the motor connector and move the wiring aside.

Step 9: Remove the Window Regulator Assembly

  • Use a 10mm socket, ratchet, and 6-inch extension to remove the regulator mounting bolts.
  • Support the regulator with one hand as the last bolt comes out.
  • Guide the regulator and motor assembly out through the large door opening.
  • On reassembly, tighten regulator mounting bolts to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).

Step 10: Transfer the Motor if Needed

  • If your new regulator does not include a motor, use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket to remove the motor bolts from the old regulator.
  • Install the motor onto the new regulator in the same position.
  • Tighten the motor bolts evenly with a torque wrench rated in Nm.
  • Torque motor fasteners to Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs) unless the new regulator instructions specify otherwise.

Step 11: Install the New Regulator

  • Slide the new regulator into the door through the large access opening.
  • Align the mounting holes by hand first.
  • Start all bolts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench rated in Nm to tighten the regulator mounting bolts to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect the window motor connector until it clicks.

Step 12: Reattach the Glass

  • Carefully remove only enough painter’s tape to lower the glass into the regulator clamps.
  • Use gloved hands to guide the glass straight down into the clamps.
  • Use a 10mm socket and torque wrench rated in Nm to tighten the glass retaining bolts to Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).
  • Reapply tape lightly until the window is tested.

Step 13: Test the Window Before Reinstalling the Panel

  • Reconnect the power window switch panel temporarily.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Turn the ignition to RUN without starting the engine.
  • Operate the window up and down carefully while watching the regulator through the door opening.
  • If the glass tilts or binds, stop and loosen the glass bolts with a 10mm socket, realign the glass, and retighten to Torque to 9 Nm (80 in-lbs).

Step 14: Reset the Auto-Up/Auto-Down Window Feature

  • Use the window switch to lower the window fully.
  • Hold the switch down for 2 extra seconds after the glass reaches the bottom.
  • Raise the window fully.
  • Hold the switch up for 2 extra seconds after the glass reaches the top.
  • Repeat once if auto-up or auto-down does not work correctly.

Step 15: Reinstall the Moisture Barrier

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable again using a 10mm socket before final connector handling.
  • Press the moisture barrier back onto the door by hand.
  • If the seal no longer sticks, apply butyl sealing tape around the edge and press it firmly into place.
  • Make sure all wiring passes through the correct openings and is not pinched.

Step 16: Reinstall the Door Trim Panel

  • Reconnect the door handle cable using your fingers or needle-nose pliers.
  • Reconnect all electrical connectors until each one clicks.
  • Hang the top of the door panel over the window ledge.
  • Line up the clips and press around the panel by hand until the clips snap in.
  • Use replacement door trim panel clips if any original clips broke during removal.

Step 17: Install Screws and Switch Panel

  • Use a 7mm socket or 8mm socket to reinstall the door panel screws.
  • Use a Phillips screwdriver if Phillips screws were removed earlier.
  • Reconnect the power window switch panel.
  • Press the switch panel down until it snaps flush into the armrest.
  • Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Test the window from the driver master switch and the local door switch.
  • ✅ Confirm auto-up and auto-down work after the reset procedure.
  • ✅ Check that the door lock, mirror switch, speaker, and inside handle work normally.
  • ✅ Spray a small amount of water over the outside glass area and check inside the door edge for leaks.
  • ✅ Listen for grinding, popping, or cable noise. Stop using the window if you hear any of these sounds.
