- 📍 Park your Highlander on level ground, shift into Park, and apply the parking brake.
- 🪟 If possible, lower the affected glass until its two mounting bolts align with the door access openings.
- 🔋 Switch off the ignition. Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery terminal, then wait at least 90 seconds.
- 📸 Use a camera or smartphone to photograph each connector, cable, and vapor-barrier position before removal.
- 🧰 Complete one door before disassembling the other. The finished side can serve as a reference.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Remove the mirror-corner garnish
- Use a plastic door-panel trim tool to pull the triangular garnish at the upper front corner of the door straight inward.
- Release its retaining clips without twisting the garnish.
- Keep clips organized by door.
Step 2: Remove the handle and armrest covers
- Use a small plastic pick to lift the small cover behind the interior door-release handle.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the exposed screw.
- Use a plastic door-panel trim tool to lift the window-switch panel from the rear edge.
- Press the connector locks and unplug the switch panel.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screw exposed beneath the switch panel or pull-handle cover.
Step 3: Detach the door trim panel
- Use plastic clip-removal pliers at the lower edge to release the perimeter clips one at a time.
- Lift the trim panel upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
- Support the panel while disconnecting the courtesy-light connector.
- Release the interior-handle cables from their retainers. Note the cable colors and positions with a camera or smartphone.
- Set the panel on a clean, padded surface.
Step 4: Expose the regulator
- Use a plastic door-panel trim tool to remove the inner brackets or access covers obstructing the vapor barrier.
- Carefully peel back the plastic vapor barrier. This is the moisture shield bonded to the door with reusable black butyl sealant.
- Use a plastic trim tool to separate stubborn sealant without tearing the barrier.
- Do not cut wiring or allow the butyl sealant to contact the glass tracks.
Step 5: Position the glass mounting clamps
- If the mounting bolts are not accessible, reconnect the window-switch connector and negative battery terminal using a 10mm socket.
- Keep hands and tools clear of the regulator, switch the ignition on, and move the glass until both clamp bolts appear in the access openings.
- Switch the ignition off. Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery terminal again, then wait at least 90 seconds.
- If the regulator is completely jammed, use a 10mm socket to loosen the regulator mounting bolts and carefully move the mechanism until the glass bolts become accessible.
Step 6: Secure and disconnect the window glass
- Attach a window-glass suction cup to the glass for controlled handling.
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the two bolts connecting the glass to the regulator.
- Raise the glass fully by hand.
- Use several long strips of wide painter's tape over the top of the door frame to hold the glass securely.
- Confirm that the glass cannot slide before continuing.
Step 7: Remove the window regulator
- Unplug the window-motor electrical connector by pressing its locking tab.
- Use a 10mm socket, 6-inch extension, and ratchet to remove the regulator and motor mounting bolts.
- Support the regulator while removing the final bolt.
- Fold the regulator rails inward as needed and guide the assembly through the largest door opening.
- Do not force the assembly against the side-impact beam or wiring harness.
Step 8: Transfer the original motor if required
- Place the old and new regulators beside each other in the same orientation.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the three motor screws while holding the motor securely.
- Do not operate the motor while it is separated from the regulator.
- Seat the motor gear squarely into the new regulator, then install the screws evenly.
- Use a low-range torque wrench with the appropriate driver to tighten the motor screws to 5.4 Nm (48 in-lbs).
- Skip this step when the replacement regulator includes the correct motor.
Step 9: Install the new regulator
- Guide the new regulator through the large door opening without bending its rails or cables.
- Start every regulator bolt by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use a 10mm socket and low-range torque wrench to tighten the regulator mounting bolts evenly to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
- Reconnect the window-motor electrical connector until its lock clicks.
Step 10: Attach and align the glass
- Hold the glass with the window-glass suction cup and remove the painter's tape.
- Lower the glass evenly into the regulator clamps. Make sure it remains inside both vertical glass channels.
- Install both glass bolts by hand.
- Use a 10mm socket and low-range torque wrench to tighten both glass bolts to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten the bolts because excessive clamp pressure can damage the glass.
Step 11: Test the regulator before closing the door
- Keep the vapor barrier and trim panel clear of the mechanism.
- Reconnect the window switch, then use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery terminal.
- Switch the ignition on and operate the window through one complete down-and-up cycle.
- Watch the glass from outside. Stop immediately if it tilts, binds, clicks, or leaves either glass channel.
- Switch the ignition off and use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery terminal before final assembly.
Step 12: Reseal the vapor barrier
- Press the original vapor barrier into its butyl sealing bead.
- Replace missing or contaminated sealant with automotive butyl sealing tape.
- Use a plastic door-panel trim tool to press the barrier firmly around its entire edge.
- Keep every drain opening at the bottom of the door unobstructed.
Step 13: Reinstall the door trim panel
- Reconnect the interior-handle cables in their original positions.
- Reconnect the courtesy-light and window-switch electrical connectors.
- Hang the upper edge of the trim panel over the window ledge.
- Align each clip with its hole, then press around the panel perimeter by hand until every clip locks.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the handle and armrest screws until snug. Do not overtighten them in the plastic retainers.
- Use a plastic door-panel trim tool to press the covers, switch panel, and mirror-corner garnish into place.
Step 14: Repeat on the opposite front door
- Use the same tools and procedure for the other front regulator.
- Keep left- and right-side regulators, fasteners, trim clips, and motor connectors separated.
✅ After Repair
- 🔋 Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery terminal securely.
- 🪟 Switch the ignition on. Fully lower the driver's window, then fully raise it and hold the switch in the UP position for at least one second.
- ✅ Confirm that the driver's one-touch and anti-pinch functions operate correctly. Repeat the initialization once if one-touch operation does not return.
- ✅ Test both front windows from their individual switches and from the driver's master switch.
- ✅ Confirm the window-lock switch, power locks, mirror controls, speakers, and courtesy lights operate normally.
- ✅ Check that each glass panel seals evenly and does not rattle during a short road test.
- ⚠️ If a window reverses near the top, inspect glass-channel alignment before repeatedly operating it.
- 🔧 Recheck the vapor-barrier seal if water enters the cabin during rain or washing.
