- Park your Corolla on level ground and turn the ignition off.
- Lower or raise the window until the glass mounting bolts line up with the access holes in the door, if the window still moves.
- If the window will not move, you can still remove the regulator, but you must support the glass by hand and tape it securely before unbolting anything.
- A window regulator is the moving frame or cable track that lifts the glass. The motor is the small electric drive attached to it.
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to prevent scratches. This tool pries trim without damaging painted or soft surfaces.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket before unplugging the window switch or regulator motor.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Disconnect the battery
- Open the hood and locate the battery.
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet handle to loosen the negative battery terminal nut.
- Lift the negative cable off the battery post and move it aside so it cannot spring back.
- Tip: Negative cable is usually black.
Step 2: Remove the front door trim screws
- Use a small flathead screwdriver to gently open the small screw cover behind the inside door handle.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screw behind the inside door handle.
- Use the small flathead screwdriver to lift the cover inside the door pull cup.
- Use the Phillips #2 screwdriver to remove the screw inside the door pull cup.
Step 3: Remove the switch panel
- Use a plastic trim removal tool to lift the power window switch panel from the armrest.
- Start at the rear edge and work forward slowly.
- Press the connector lock tab with a small flathead screwdriver and unplug the window switch connector.
- Set the switch panel in a safe place.
Step 4: Remove the interior door panel
- Slide a panel clip removal tool between the door panel and the metal door shell at the lower edge.
- Pop the trim clips loose one at a time around the bottom and sides.
- Lift the door panel straight upward to unhook it from the top window ledge.
- Disconnect any remaining door handle cable or electrical connector using a small flathead screwdriver if needed.
- Tip: Do not yank the panel away.
Step 5: Peel back the moisture barrier
- The clear or foam sheet behind the trim panel is the moisture barrier. It keeps water away from the interior trim.
- Use your hands and a plastic trim removal tool to carefully peel the moisture barrier away from the door.
- Keep the black sticky butyl sealant attached if possible.
- If the sealant stretches or tears, use replacement butyl sealant tape during reassembly.
Step 6: Position and secure the glass
- If the glass can move, temporarily reconnect the window switch connector by hand.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable loosely with a 10mm socket only long enough to move the glass.
- Turn the ignition on and use the switch to align the glass bolts with the door access holes.
- Turn the ignition off and disconnect the negative battery cable again using a 10mm socket.
- Use painter’s tape 2-inch width to tape the glass to the upper door frame from both sides of the glass.
- Use at least 3 long strips of tape over the top of the door frame.
- Tip: More tape is better here.
Step 7: Detach the glass from the regulator
- Look through the access openings in the door to find the glass mounting bolts.
- Use a 10mm socket, 3-inch socket extension, and ratchet handle to loosen the glass mounting bolts.
- Do not let the glass drop. Confirm the painter’s tape 2-inch width is holding it securely.
- If the bolts are removable on your replacement setup, remove them and set them aside.
Step 8: Unplug the regulator motor
- Find the electrical connector at the window motor on the regulator assembly.
- Press the lock tab with a small flathead screwdriver.
- Pull the connector straight off by hand.
- If the connector is tight, use needle-nose pliers lightly on the connector body, not the wires.
Step 9: Remove the old regulator
- Use a 10mm socket, 3-inch socket extension, and ratchet handle to remove the regulator mounting bolts from the door.
- Support the regulator with one hand while removing the last bolt.
- Guide the regulator and motor assembly out through the large door opening.
- Move slowly so the regulator does not scratch the glass or wiring harness.
Step 10: Install the new regulator
- Compare the new regulator to the old one before installing it. The mounting points and glass clamps should match.
- Guide the new regulator into the door through the large opening.
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet handle to start all regulator mounting bolts by hand first.
- Once all bolts are started, tighten them evenly.
- Use a torque wrench inch-pound with a 10mm socket to tighten the regulator mounting bolts to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
Step 11: Reattach the glass
- Carefully remove just enough painter’s tape 2-inch width to lower the glass by hand into the regulator clamps.
- Keep one hand supporting the glass while aligning it in the clamps or mounting points.
- Use a 10mm socket and ratchet handle to start the glass bolts.
- Use a torque wrench inch-pound with a 10mm socket to tighten the glass bolts to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
- Tip: Do not overtighten glass bolts.
Step 12: Test window operation before reassembly
- Plug the regulator motor connector back in by hand until it clicks.
- Temporarily plug in the window switch connector by hand.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket.
- Turn the ignition on and run the window fully down and fully up.
- Watch that the glass moves smoothly in the tracks and does not tilt.
- If the glass binds, turn the ignition off, disconnect the battery with a 10mm socket, loosen the glass bolts slightly, center the glass, and retighten to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).
Step 13: Reinstall the moisture barrier
- Disconnect the negative battery cable again using a 10mm socket.
- Press the moisture barrier back onto the door by hand.
- If the original sealant no longer sticks, apply butyl sealant tape around the edge.
- Make sure the wiring connectors pass through the correct openings.
Step 14: Reinstall the door panel
- Reconnect the door handle cable and any electrical connectors by hand.
- Hang the door panel on the upper window ledge first.
- Line up the trim clips with their holes.
- Press around the edges of the panel by hand until each clip snaps in.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the screw behind the inside door handle.
- Use a Phillips #2 screwdriver to reinstall the screw inside the door pull cup.
- Snap both screw covers back in by hand.
Step 15: Reinstall the switch panel and reconnect battery
- Plug the window switch connector into the switch panel by hand until it clicks.
- Press the switch panel back into the armrest by hand.
- Reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
- Use the 10mm socket and torque wrench inch-pound to tighten the battery terminal nut snugly to Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Test the window from the door switch and from the driver master switch.
- ✅ Confirm the auto-up and auto-down function works if equipped.
- ✅ If auto operation does not work, initialize the window: turn ignition on, lower the window fully, hold the switch down for 2 seconds, raise the window fully, then hold the switch up for 2 seconds.
- ✅ Check that the door locks, mirror switch, speaker, and courtesy light still work.
- ✅ Spray water lightly over the outside glass and confirm no water leaks past the moisture barrier into the cabin.
- ✅ Listen for scraping, clicking, or popping. Stop using the window if you hear abnormal noise.
