šŸ”§ Focus - Front Window Regulator Replacement

The front window regulator moves the glass up and down inside the door. On your Focus, the regulator is serviced inside the front door after removing the door trim panel, supporting the glass, disconnecting the motor, and unbolting the regulator assembly.

Difficulty Level: Intermediate | Estimated Time: 1.5-2.5 hours per door

āš ļø Safety & Precautions

  • āš ļø Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging the window motor connector.
  • āš ļø Door glass is heavy and can drop suddenly. Tape and support it before removing regulator bolts.
  • āš ļø Wear safety glasses and gloves. Door shells have sharp metal edges.
  • āš ļø Do not put fingers inside the regulator tracks while testing. The mechanism can pinch hard.
  • āš ļø Keep the moisture barrier intact and resealed. It prevents water leaks into the cabin.

  • Front door trim panel clips - Qty: As needed
  • Butyl sealing tape - Qty: 1 roll if moisture barrier seal is damaged

šŸ“‹ Before You Begin

  • Park your Focus on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • Work on one front door at a time.
  • If the window still moves, raise or lower it until the glass clamp bolts are visible through the door access holes.
  • If the window is stuck, you may need to tape the glass first and access the clamps by moving the regulator after loosening it.
  • Use painter’s tape on the painted door edge and upper door frame to prevent scratches.
  • A glass suction cup handle sticks to the glass so you can safely hold and lift it.
  • A trim clip removal tool is a fork-shaped tool that pops plastic clips loose without damaging the door panel.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket once the glass is positioned.

šŸ”Ø Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Position and Secure the Glass

  • If the window motor works, use the window switch to move the glass until the regulator glass clamp bolts are visible through the door access openings.
  • Use painter’s tape to tape the glass to the upper door frame in several long strips.
  • Attach glass suction cup handles to the glass if you have them.
  • Use a 10mm socket to disconnect the negative battery cable after the glass is positioned.
  • Use more tape than you think.

Step 2: Remove the Front Door Switch Trim

  • Use a plastic pry tool set to gently lift the window switch trim from the armrest area.
  • Press the connector release tabs by hand and unplug the switch connectors.
  • If a connector tab is tight, use a pick tool gently to release it.
  • Set the switch trim aside in a safe place.

Step 3: Remove Hidden Door Panel Screws

  • Use a plastic pry tool set to remove the small trim covers in the pull handle and behind the interior door handle if equipped.
  • Use a Torx T20 screwdriver, Torx T25 screwdriver, or 7mm socket to remove the exposed screws.
  • Use a flashlight to check the bottom edge of the door panel for any remaining screws.
  • Keep screws grouped by location so they go back in the same place.

Step 4: Remove the Front Door Trim Panel

  • Slide a trim clip removal tool between the lower edge of the trim panel and the metal door shell.
  • Pry straight outward to pop the first clip loose.
  • Work around the sides and bottom with the trim clip removal tool until all clips release.
  • Lift the panel upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
  • Support the panel so it does not hang from wiring or cables.

Step 5: Disconnect Door Cables and Connectors

  • Use needle-nose pliers to rotate the interior handle cable sleeve out of its bracket.
  • Lift the cable end from the handle lever by hand.
  • Disconnect any remaining electrical connectors by pressing their release tabs by hand.
  • Use a pick tool only if a connector lock is stuck.
  • Set the door panel on a clean surface.

Step 6: Peel Back the Moisture Barrier

  • Use a plastic pry tool set to slowly separate the moisture barrier from the sticky butyl seal.
  • Peel back only enough of the barrier to access the regulator and motor.
  • If the butyl stretches, use a flat-blade screwdriver carefully to guide it away from the door shell.
  • Do not tear the barrier. It keeps rainwater out of the interior.
  • Slow peeling saves resealing time.

Step 7: Disconnect the Window Motor Connector

  • Use a flashlight to locate the window motor connector on the regulator assembly.
  • Press the connector release tab by hand and pull the connector straight off.
  • If needed, use a pick tool to gently release the locking tab.
  • Do not pull on the wires.

Step 8: Loosen the Glass Clamp Bolts

  • Use a 10mm socket to loosen the two glass clamp bolts through the access openings.
  • Do not fully remove the clamp bolts unless the new regulator design requires it.
  • Use glass suction cup handles to lift the glass fully upward.
  • Add more painter’s tape from the glass over the top of the door frame to hold it securely.
  • Make sure the glass cannot slide down before removing the regulator.

Step 9: Remove the Regulator Mounting Bolts

  • Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket to remove the regulator rail mounting bolts.
  • Use a 3/8-inch drive extension if bolts are recessed inside the access holes.
  • Support the regulator with one hand while removing the last bolt.
  • If the motor is separate from the new regulator, use a Torx T20 screwdriver or Torx T25 screwdriver to remove the motor screws.

Step 10: Remove the Old Regulator from the Door

  • Fold the regulator slightly by hand while guiding it through the largest door access opening.
  • Use a flat-blade screwdriver only to gently guide cables or tabs if they catch.
  • Do not scratch the glass or bend the window run channel.
  • Compare the old regulator to the new one before installing.

Step 11: Transfer the Motor if Needed

  • If your replacement regulator does not include a motor, use a Torx T20 screwdriver or Torx T25 screwdriver to remove the motor from the old regulator.
  • Install the motor onto the new regulator in the same position.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the motor screws to Torque to 4 Nm (35 in-lbs).
  • If the new regulator includes a motor, skip this step.

Step 12: Install the New Regulator

  • Guide the new regulator through the door access opening by hand.
  • Align the regulator rails and motor bracket with the mounting holes.
  • Start all bolts by hand first to prevent cross-threading.
  • Use an 8mm socket or 10mm socket to snug the regulator bolts.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the regulator mounting bolts to Torque to 8 Nm (71 in-lbs).

Step 13: Reattach the Glass to the Regulator

  • Carefully remove some painter’s tape while keeping one hand or glass suction cup handles on the glass.
  • Lower the glass into the regulator clamps.
  • Make sure the glass sits fully and evenly in both clamps.
  • Use a 10mm socket to snug the glass clamp bolts.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten the glass clamp bolts to Torque to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).

Step 14: Plug In and Test the Window

  • Plug the window motor connector in by hand until it clicks.
  • Temporarily reconnect the negative battery cable using a 10mm socket.
  • Reconnect the window switch trim connector by hand.
  • Run the window halfway down and back up while watching the glass.
  • If the glass tilts, binds, or moves slowly, stop and loosen the clamps with a 10mm socket to realign the glass.
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable again using a 10mm socket before final reassembly.
  • Test before closing everything.

Step 15: Reseal the Moisture Barrier

  • Press the moisture barrier back into the original butyl adhesive by hand.
  • If the seal is torn or no longer sticky, apply butyl sealing tape around the loose areas.
  • Make sure the bottom and front edges are fully sealed.
  • A poor seal can let rainwater drip into the cabin.

Step 16: Reinstall the Door Trim Panel

  • Reconnect the interior handle cable by hand.
  • Reconnect any door panel electrical connectors by hand.
  • Hang the top of the door panel over the window ledge.
  • Line up the trim clips with their holes.
  • Press around the edges by hand until each clip snaps into place.
  • Replace any broken clips with new front door trim panel clips.

Step 17: Reinstall Screws and Switch Trim

  • Use a Torx T20 screwdriver, Torx T25 screwdriver, or 7mm socket to reinstall the door panel screws.
  • Use a torque wrench to tighten small door trim screws to Torque to 2 Nm (18 in-lbs).
  • Reconnect the window switch connector by hand.
  • Snap the switch trim into place using hand pressure.

Step 18: Reconnect the Battery and Initialize the Window

  • Use a 10mm socket to reconnect the negative battery cable.
  • Turn the ignition on.
  • Fully close the window using the switch, then hold the switch in the up position for 2-3 seconds.
  • Fully lower the window, then hold the switch in the down position for 2-3 seconds.
  • Repeat once if one-touch operation does not work immediately.

āœ… After Repair

  • Run the window fully up and down at least five times.
  • Listen for scraping, clicking, cable popping, or slow movement.
  • Confirm the glass seals evenly at the top weatherstrip.
  • Test the driver master switch and the repaired door switch.
  • Check that the door locks, mirror switch, and speaker still work if any connectors were unplugged.
  • After rain or a car wash, check the front floor area for moisture.
