🔧 Focus - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Replacing the front turn signal bulbs on your Focus is a beginner-friendly repair. The front turn signal bulb sits inside the headlamp assembly, and the easiest access is by loosening and pulling the headlamp assembly forward.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 30-45 minutes
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the exterior lights off and remove the key before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the headlamp area cool if the lights were recently on.
- ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of the new bulb with bare fingers. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Disconnecting the battery is not normally required for this bulb replacement, but avoid turning the lights on while the bulb socket is removed.

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood
- Use your hand to pull the hood release inside the cabin.
- Use your hand to release the secondary hood latch at the front of the hood.
- Raise the hood and support it securely with the hood prop rod.
Step 2: Remove the Upper Headlamp Fasteners
- Use the Torx T30 screwdriver to remove the upper headlamp retaining screws.
- Place the screws on a microfiber towel so they do not roll away or scratch paint.
- Keep screws grouped by side.
Step 3: Release the Headlamp Assembly
- Use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet if your Focus has a lower/side retaining bolt at the headlamp mounting point.
- Use the plastic trim removal tool to gently help free the headlamp from its locating tabs if it feels stuck.
- Pull the headlamp assembly straight forward just enough to reach behind it.
- Do not yank the headlamp. The wiring harness is still connected.
Step 4: Locate the Front Turn Signal Bulb Socket
- Look at the rear of the headlamp assembly and find the turn signal bulb socket.
- The front turn signal socket is typically the amber bulb socket in the headlamp housing.
- Use a microfiber towel under the headlamp edge if needed to protect painted surfaces.
Step 5: Remove the Old Bulb
- Use your hand to rotate the turn signal bulb socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn.
- Pull the socket straight out of the headlamp housing.
- Use your hand to pull the old bulb straight out of the socket.
- If the bulb is tight, gently rock it side to side while pulling. Do not crush the glass.
Step 6: Install the New Bulb
- Put on clean nitrile gloves before touching the new bulb.
- Push the new front amber turn signal bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- If you accidentally touch the bulb glass, wipe it clean with a microfiber towel.
- Match the bulb base shape carefully.
Step 7: Reinstall the Bulb Socket
- Insert the bulb socket back into the headlamp housing.
- Use your hand to rotate the socket clockwise until it locks.
- Make sure the socket sits flat and sealed against the headlamp housing.
Step 8: Test the Turn Signal
- Turn the ignition to accessory mode.
- Use the turn signal stalk to test the repaired side.
- Use the hazard switch to confirm both front turn signals flash normally.
- If the signal flashes very fast, the bulb may not be seated correctly or the wrong bulb may be installed.
Step 9: Reinstall the Headlamp Assembly
- Slide the headlamp assembly back into its locating tabs by hand.
- Use the Torx T30 screwdriver to reinstall the upper headlamp screws.
- Use the 10mm socket and 1/4-inch ratchet to reinstall any 10mm retaining bolt removed earlier.
- Tighten the headlamp fasteners snugly. Torque to 5 Nm (44 in-lbs).
- Do not overtighten. The headlamp mounting tabs are plastic and can crack.
Step 10: Final Light Check
- Use the turn signal stalk to check the left and right front turn signals.
- Use the hazard switch to check both front turn signals together.
- Walk around the front of your Focus and confirm the repaired bulb is bright amber and flashing evenly.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Confirm there is no fast flashing from the dashboard turn indicator.
- ✅ Make sure the headlamp assembly sits flush with the bumper and fender.
- ✅ Verify the hood closes normally and does not contact the headlamp.
- ✅ If one front turn signal failed from age, replace the other side soon so brightness matches.
