🔧 Focus - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
Replacing the front turn signal bulbs on your Focus is a straightforward beginner repair. The front turn signal bulbs sit inside the headlamp assemblies, so you’ll access them from behind the headlight housings under the hood.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the ignition and exterior lights off before starting.
- ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool if the lights were recently used.
- ⚠️ Do not force plastic tabs or bulb sockets; the headlight housing plastic can crack.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Focus on level ground.
- Shift to Park or 1st gear if equipped with a manual transmission.
- Set the parking brake.
- Turn the ignition off and remove the key.
- Open the hood and support it securely.
- A trim clip removal tool is a small pry tool used to lift plastic fasteners without breaking them.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Open the Hood
- Use your hand to pull the hood release inside the cabin.
- Use your fingers to release the secondary hood latch at the front edge of the hood.
- Raise the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod.
- Use the flashlight to look behind the driver-side headlight assembly.
Step 2: Identify the Front Turn Signal Bulb Socket
- Use the flashlight to locate the turn signal bulb socket at the rear of the headlight housing.
- The bulb socket is the twist-in plastic holder that carries the bulb and wiring.
- Look for the socket positioned toward the outer area of the headlight assembly.
- Compare with the new bulb location.
Step 3: Release Access If Needed
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver to gently release any nearby plastic locking tab blocking access.
- Use the trim clip removal tool only if a plastic clip or cover needs light lifting.
- Do not pry against the clear headlight lens.
- If access is tight, use your hands to gently move nearby wiring aside without pulling on the wires.
Step 4: Remove the Driver-Side Turn Signal Socket
- Use your gloved hand to grip the turn signal bulb socket by its plastic base.
- Rotate the socket counterclockwise about a quarter turn until it unlocks.
- Pull the socket straight rearward out of the headlight housing.
- Do not twist or bend the wiring harness.
Step 5: Remove the Old Bulb
- Use clean nitrile gloves to grip the old bulb.
- Pull the bulb straight out of the socket if it is a push-in style.
- If the bulb is a bayonet-lock style, press it gently inward and rotate it counterclockwise before removing it.
- A bayonet-lock bulb has small side pins that lock into slots in the socket.
- Place the old bulb on the shop towel.
Step 6: Install the New Driver-Side Bulb
- Use clean nitrile gloves to handle the new front turn signal bulb.
- Push the new bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- If it is a bayonet-lock bulb, press it gently inward and rotate clockwise until it locks.
- Make sure the bulb sits straight and does not wobble in the socket.
Step 7: Reinstall the Driver-Side Socket
- Use your gloved hand to align the socket tabs with the slots in the headlight housing.
- Push the socket fully into the housing.
- Rotate the socket clockwise about a quarter turn until it locks.
- No torque specification applies to this plastic bulb socket; hand-tighten only until locked.
Step 8: Repeat on the Passenger Side
- Use the flashlight to locate the passenger-side front turn signal socket behind the headlight housing.
- Use the flat-blade screwdriver only if a plastic tab needs gentle release.
- Use your gloved hand to rotate the socket counterclockwise and pull it out.
- Remove the old bulb from the socket.
- Install the new bulb into the socket.
- Push the socket into the headlight housing and rotate it clockwise until locked.
- No torque specification applies to this plastic bulb socket; hand-tighten only until locked.
Step 9: Test the Front Turn Signals
- Use your hand to turn the ignition to accessory or ON, without starting the engine if you prefer.
- Use the turn signal stalk to test the left front turn signal.
- Use the turn signal stalk to test the right front turn signal.
- Use the hazard switch to confirm both front turn signals flash together.
- If one side flashes very fast, use the flashlight and recheck that the bulb is fully seated in the socket.
Step 10: Final Fit Check
- Use the flashlight to confirm both sockets are fully locked into the headlight housings.
- Use your hand to gently check that the wiring is not stretched, pinched, or loose.
- Close the hood securely by hand.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Confirm both front turn signals flash at normal speed.
- ✅ Confirm the hazard lights flash both front bulbs evenly.
- ✅ Check for warning messages on the instrument cluster.
- ✅ If a bulb does not light, turn the ignition off and recheck bulb seating and socket lock position.
- ✅ No scan tool, coding, or infotainment reset is required.
