  • ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool if the lights were recently on.
  • ⚠️ Wear gloves and avoid touching the glass part of the new bulbs.
  • ⚠️ Do not pull on the wiring harness; twist the plastic socket only.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your Forester on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 💡 Turn the headlight switch and hazard switch OFF.
  • 🔑 Remove the key from the ignition.
  • 🧤 Put on clean nitrile gloves before touching the new bulbs.
  • 🔦 Use a flashlight to identify the front turn signal socket behind each headlamp housing.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the Hood

  • Use your hand to pull the hood release inside the cabin.
  • Use your hand to release the secondary hood latch at the front of the hood.
  • Raise the hood and support it with the hood prop rod.
  • Use the flashlight to look behind the driver-side headlamp housing.

Step 2: Locate the Driver-Side Turn Signal Socket

  • Use the flashlight to find the front turn signal bulb socket at the outer/rear area of the headlamp housing.
  • The socket is a plastic holder that twists into the lamp housing.
  • A socket is the plastic piece that holds the bulb and connects it to the wiring.
  • Tip: Match the new bulb location visually.

Step 3: Remove the Driver-Side Bulb Socket

  • Use your gloved hand to grip the plastic socket body.
  • Turn the socket counterclockwise about one-quarter turn.
  • Pull the socket straight rearward out of the headlamp housing.
  • No torque spec applies; the socket is hand-tight only.

Step 4: Replace the Driver-Side Bulb

  • Use your gloved fingers to pull the old front turn signal bulb straight out of the socket.
  • Push the new front turn signal bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • If it feels loose, remove it and push it in again evenly.
  • Tip: Do not twist wedge bulbs.

Step 5: Reinstall the Driver-Side Bulb Socket

  • Use your gloved hand to align the socket tabs with the slots in the headlamp housing.
  • Push the socket into the housing.
  • Turn the socket clockwise about one-quarter turn until it locks.
  • No torque spec applies; tighten by hand only.

Step 6: Replace the Passenger-Side Bulb

  • Use the flashlight to locate the front turn signal socket behind the passenger-side headlamp housing.
  • Use your gloved hand to turn the socket counterclockwise about one-quarter turn.
  • Pull the socket straight rearward out of the headlamp housing.
  • Use your gloved fingers to pull the old bulb straight out.
  • Push the new front turn signal bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
  • Use your gloved hand to reinstall the socket into the housing.
  • Turn the socket clockwise until it locks.

Step 7: Test Both Front Turn Signals

  • Use your hand to turn the ignition key to ON without starting the engine.
  • Use the turn signal stalk to test the left front turn signal.
  • Use the turn signal stalk to test the right front turn signal.
  • Use the hazard switch to confirm both front turn signals flash evenly.
  • If a bulb does not flash, turn the ignition OFF and reseat the bulb and socket by hand.

Step 8: Close the Hood

  • Use your hand to remove the hood prop rod from its support point.
  • Secure the hood prop rod back into its clip.
  • Lower the hood and let it latch securely.
  • Use your hands to gently lift the hood edge and confirm it is latched.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Confirm both front turn signals flash at a normal speed.
  • ✅ Confirm the hazard lights work on both sides.
  • ✅ If one side flashes very fast, the bulb may not be seated fully or may be the wrong type.
  • ✅ No scan tool, coding, or reset is required.
