🔧 Compass - Front Turn Signal Bulb Replacement
On your Compass, the front turn signal is either a replaceable amber bulb inside the headlamp housing, or an LED unit that’s not serviced as a bulb. The steps below show both paths so you can get it fixed without removing the whole front bumper.
Quick questions (reply with just the answers): 1) Are your headlights halogen (yellow-ish) or LED (bright white with a sharp cutoff)? 2) Which side is out: driver, passenger, or both?
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1.0 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Turn the lights OFF and let the headlamp cool before touching anything.
- ⚠️ Support the vehicle with jack stands if you lift it—never rely on a jack alone.
- ⚠️ Don’t touch a new bulb’s glass with bare fingers; oil can shorten bulb life.
- ⚠️ Keep the key out of the vehicle so lights can’t turn on unexpectedly.

đź“‹ Before You Begin
- Park on level ground, shift to 1st gear, and set the parking brake.
- Turn the steering wheel fully away from the side you’re working on (gives more room at the fender liner).
- Look at the headlight: if you see an obvious removable bulb socket cover on the back of the headlamp, it’s usually the replaceable bulb style.
- If you plan to lift the vehicle, slightly loosen the wheel lug nuts first using a 21mm socket while the tire is still on the ground.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Create access at the front fender liner
- Turn the wheel fully outward for the side you’re working on (no tools).
- If you need more space, lift that front corner using a floor jack and support it with jack stands.
- If removing the wheel: remove lug nuts using a 21mm socket.
Step 2: Remove the front section of the fender liner fasteners
- Remove the small screws along the front edge of the liner using a 7mm socket or 8mm socket (varies by fastener).
- Remove plastic push clips using a trim clip removal tool. Pry the center pin up first
- Pull the liner back just enough to reach behind the headlamp. Use a flashlight so you can see the bulb socket clearly.
Step 3 (Halogen-style): Remove the turn signal bulb socket
- Locate the turn signal bulb socket at the rear/side of the headlamp housing.
- Twist the socket counterclockwise by hand (use nitrile gloves for grip) and pull it straight out.
- If it’s tight, gently wiggle—don’t force or you can crack the housing.
Step 4 (Halogen-style): Replace the bulb
- Pull the old bulb straight out of the socket (by hand with nitrile gloves).
- Push the new 7440A amber bulb straight into the socket until fully seated.
- Don’t touch the glass—hold it by the base.
Step 5 (Halogen-style): Reinstall the socket and test
- Reinstall the socket into the headlamp and twist clockwise by hand until it locks.
- Turn the ignition to ON and test the turn signal and hazards (no tools).
- If it doesn’t work: remove the socket again and confirm the bulb is fully seated.
Step 6 (LED-style check): If there is no removable bulb socket
- If you cannot find a twist-out bulb socket and the turn signal appears built into the lamp, the turn signal is likely LED and not a replaceable bulb.
- At that point, the repair is typically replacing the headlamp assembly (more involved) and may require aiming the headlamp afterward.
- Reply with a clear photo of the back of the headlamp (through the liner opening) and I’ll tell you which setup you have.
Step 7: Reinstall the fender liner
- Reposition the liner.
- Reinstall screws using a 7mm socket or 8mm socket.
- Reinstall push clips using your fingers and the trim clip removal tool to press them flush.
Step 8: Reinstall the wheel (if removed)
- Install lug nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Lower the vehicle off the jack stands using the floor jack.
- Tighten lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench: Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).
âś… After Repair
- Verify the front turn signal flashes normally on both left and right.
- Turn on hazards and walk around the vehicle to confirm all corners flash.
- If the new bulb hyper-flashes, recheck seating and confirm you installed the correct bulb type.
