🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts
- Use a 21mm socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen each front wheel lug nut about one turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Loosen wheels while tires touch ground.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Vehicle
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the approved front side support points.
- Lower the RAV4 gently onto the jack stands.
- Use safety glasses and mechanic gloves before working near suspension parts.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use a 21mm socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to remove the front lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and set them flat on the ground.
Step 4: Access the Upper Strut Mount Nuts
- Open the hood.
- Use a trim clip removal tool and flathead screwdriver to remove any plastic cowl trim clips needed to see the upper strut mounting nuts.
- The upper strut mount is the top mounting plate where the strut bolts to the body.
- Do not remove the center strut shaft nut. Only remove the outer mounting nuts.
Step 5: Mark the Strut-to-Knuckle Position
- Use a paint marker to draw alignment marks across the strut lower bracket and steering knuckle.
- The steering knuckle is the metal part that holds the wheel hub and connects to the strut.
- This mark helps you install the new strut close to the original position.
Step 6: Remove Brake Hose and ABS Wire Brackets
- Use a 12mm socket and ratchet 3/8-inch drive to remove the brake hose bracket bolt from the strut.
- Use a 10mm socket or trim clip removal tool to detach the ABS wheel speed sensor wire bracket or clip from the strut.
- Move the hose and wire aside carefully. Do not pull or stretch them.
- Use a bungee cord 24-inch if needed to hold the hose safely out of the way.
Step 7: Disconnect the Stabilizer Bar Link from the Strut
- Spray the stabilizer link nut with penetrating oil spray.
- Use a 17mm wrench or 17mm socket to remove the stabilizer bar link nut from the strut bracket.
- The stabilizer bar link is a short rod that helps control body roll during turns.
- If the stud spins, hold the stud with the correct internal hex or locking area if equipped, while turning the nut with the 17mm wrench.
- Move the link away from the strut.
Step 8: Support the Steering Knuckle
- Place the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) lightly under the lower control arm or knuckle area.
- Do not lift the vehicle. Just support the suspension so it does not drop suddenly.
- Use a bungee cord 24-inch to help support the knuckle if needed.
Step 9: Remove the Lower Strut-to-Knuckle Bolts
- Use a 22mm socket, 22mm wrench, and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen the two large strut-to-knuckle nuts.
- Remove the nuts, then push or tap the bolts out using a rubber mallet.
- If the bolts are tight, use a pry bar 18-inch carefully to relieve pressure while removing them.
- Keep the knuckle supported so the brake hose and axle are not strained.
Step 10: Remove the Upper Strut Mount Nuts
- Support the strut with one hand.
- Use a 14mm socket and ratchet 3/8-inch drive to remove the three upper strut mounting nuts.
- Do not remove the center nut on the strut assembly.
- Lower the strut assembly out through the wheel opening.
- Keep fingers clear as it drops.
Step 11: Compare the New Strut Assembly
- Place the old and new front complete strut assembly side by side.
- Check that the brake hose bracket, ABS wire bracket, spring orientation, and top mount studs match.
- Use a paint marker to mark the front-facing side if it helps you keep orientation clear.
Step 12: Install the New Strut Assembly
- Guide the new strut assembly up into the strut tower by hand.
- Install the three new upper mounting nuts finger-tight first.
- Use a 14mm socket and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the upper strut mounting nuts to Torque to 47 Nm (35 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Reconnect the Strut to the Steering Knuckle
- Align the steering knuckle with the lower strut bracket using the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) as light support.
- Install the lower strut-to-knuckle bolts through the bracket.
- Install new nuts by hand.
- Use a 22mm socket, 22mm wrench, and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the strut-to-knuckle nuts to Torque to 240 Nm (177 ft-lbs).
Step 14: Reinstall the Stabilizer Bar Link
- Insert the stabilizer bar link stud into the strut bracket.
- Install a new nut by hand.
- Use a 17mm socket, 17mm wrench, and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the stabilizer link nut to Torque to 74 Nm (55 ft-lbs).
Step 15: Reattach Brake Hose and ABS Wire Brackets
- Use a 12mm socket and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to install the brake hose bracket bolt.
- Tighten the brake hose bracket bolt to Torque to 19 Nm (14 ft-lbs).
- Use a 10mm socket or trim clip removal tool to secure the ABS wire bracket or clip.
- Confirm the brake hose and ABS wire are not twisted, stretched, or rubbing the tire.
Step 16: Repeat on the Other Side
- Repeat Steps 4 through 15 for the opposite front strut assembly.
- Use the same tools and torque specs.
- Take your time and compare both sides as you go.
Step 17: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Install both front wheels by hand.
- Use a 21mm socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- A star pattern means tightening across the wheel instead of going around in a circle.
Step 18: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Lower the RAV4 fully to the ground.
- Use a 21mm socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).
Step 19: Reinstall Any Cowl Trim
- Use a trim clip removal tool and your hands to reinstall the plastic cowl trim and clips.
- Use a flathead screwdriver only if needed to guide clips into place gently.

- ✅ Bounce each front corner gently. The vehicle should settle quickly without repeated bouncing.
- ✅ Start your RAV4 and turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock while parked. Listen for clunks or rubbing.
