📋 Before You Begin
- Park your 1500 on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires so the truck cannot roll.
- If your 1500 has factory air suspension, enable Uconnect Apps > Settings > Suspension > Tire Jack Mode before lifting.
- Spray penetrating oil on the lower strut bolts and upper mounting nuts. Let it soak for 10-15 minutes.
- Use a paint marker to mark the position of the lower strut hardware before removal.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts
- Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front lug nut about half a turn.
- Keep the tires touching the ground while loosening them.
- Tip: Do not remove lug nuts yet.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Truck
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your 1500 at a solid front frame or crossmember lift point.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under solid frame points on both sides.
- Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands.
- Leave the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum nearby to support the lower control arm later.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels.
- Slide one wheel flat under the frame as an added safety backup.
Step 4: Access the Upper Strut Mount
- Open the hood.
- Use a trim clip removal tool to remove any plastic clips blocking access to the strut tower area.
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet if small plastic cover bolts need to be removed.
- Locate the three upper strut mounting nuts at the top of the strut tower.
- Do not loosen the center shaft nut in the middle of the strut.
Step 5: Support the Lower Control Arm
- Place the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum under the lower control arm on the side you are working on.
- Raise the jack just until it supports the lower control arm. Do not lift the truck off the jack stand.
- The lower control arm is the large metal arm below the front wheel hub.
Step 6: Remove the Lower Strut Bolt
- Use a 21mm socket, 21mm wrench, and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the lower strut mounting bolt and nut.
- Remove the nut with the 21mm socket and 21mm wrench.
- Slide the bolt out by hand. If stuck, gently tap it out with a rubber mallet.
- Use a pry bar gently if the lower strut eye is tight in the bracket.
Step 7: Remove the Upper Strut Mounting Nuts
- Use a 15mm socket or 16mm socket with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the three upper strut mounting nuts.
- Hold the strut assembly with one hand while removing the last nut.
- Do not remove the center shaft nut.
- Lower the strut assembly out through the wheel opening.
- Tip: The assembly is heavy; use two hands.
Step 8: Compare the Old and New Strut Assemblies
- Place the old and new strut assemblies side by side on the ground.
- Check that the upper studs, lower mounting eye, spring position, and overall length match.
- Use a paint marker to mark the outward-facing side of the new strut if needed.
Step 9: Install the New Front Strut Assembly
- Guide the new loaded strut assembly up into the strut tower by hand.
- Start the three upper mounting nuts by hand first.
- Use a 15mm socket or 16mm socket with a 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the upper nuts evenly.
- Align the lower strut eye with the lower control arm bracket.
- Use a pry bar gently if small alignment movement is needed.
- Slide the lower strut bolt through by hand and start the nut by hand.
Step 10: Torque the Front Strut Fasteners
- Use a 15mm socket or 16mm socket with a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the upper mounting nuts.
- Torque front upper strut mounting nuts to 61 Nm (45 ft-lbs).
- Use a 21mm socket, 21mm wrench, and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lower strut bolt and nut.
- Torque front lower strut bolt to 203 Nm (150 ft-lbs).
- Tip: Torque means final measured tightening force.
Step 11: Repeat on the Other Side
- Use the same tools and steps to replace the front strut assembly on the opposite side.
- Keep the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum supporting the lower control arm while removing and installing each strut.
- Replace both sides before road testing.
Step 12: Reinstall Covers and Front Wheels
- Use a 10mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall any plastic cover bolts.
- Use a trim clip removal tool to reinstall any plastic clips carefully.
- Place the front wheels back onto the hubs.
- Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 13: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the truck slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower your 1500 fully to the ground.
- Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque wheel lug nuts to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).

- ✅ Push down firmly once on each front corner. The truck should settle quickly without repeated bouncing.
- ✅ Road test at low speed first. Listen for clunks, rattles, or pulling.
- ✅ Recheck lug nut torque after 25-50 miles.
- ✅ Get a front wheel alignment after strut replacement to protect your tires.
- ✅ If equipped with air suspension, turn off Uconnect Apps > Settings > Suspension > Tire Jack Mode after the truck is back on the ground.
