📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Ranger on level ground and set the parking brake.
- 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- 🔩 Loosen the front wheel lug nuts slightly before lifting the truck.
- 🖊️ Use a paint marker to mark the position of the lower strut mount and related hardware before removal. This helps get the alignment close enough to drive to an alignment shop.
- 📌 This procedure is for replacing complete front loaded strut assemblies. Do not disassemble the coil spring from the strut.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front wheel lug nuts about one turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Loosen before lifting for safety.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Truck
- Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front of your Ranger at a solid front frame or crossmember lift point.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the frame rails.
- Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands.
- Use the floor jack to lightly support the lower control arm on the side you are working on. The lower control arm is the suspension arm under the wheel hub.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheel
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove the wheel and set it flat away from the work area.
Step 4: Free the Brake Hose and ABS Wire Brackets
- Use a 10mm or 13mm socket if equipped to remove any brake hose or ABS wire bracket attached to the strut area.
- Use a trim clip removal tool to release plastic wire retainers from the strut or nearby brackets.
- Do not let the brake hose or ABS wire stretch.
Step 5: Disconnect the Stabilizer Bar Link if It Blocks Strut Removal
- Use an 18mm socket and 18mm wrench to remove the stabilizer bar link nut from the lower control arm or bar if it blocks access.
- A stabilizer bar link connects the suspension to the anti-roll bar and helps reduce body lean.
- Move the link aside carefully.
Step 6: Remove the Lower Strut Mounting Bolt
- Use penetrating oil on the lower strut mounting nut and bolt.
- Use a 24mm socket and 24mm wrench to remove the lower strut nut.
- Use a dead blow hammer and pry bar to slide the lower strut bolt out if it is tight.
- Keep the floor jack lightly supporting the lower control arm so the bolt is not loaded.
Step 7: Remove the Upper Strut Mount Nuts
- Open the hood.
- Use a flashlight to locate the three upper strut mounting nuts at the top of the strut tower.
- Use a 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the three upper strut mounting nuts.
- Do not remove the large center shaft nut in the middle of the strut mount.
- Do not remove the center shaft nut.
Step 8: Remove the Old Strut Assembly
- Use one hand to support the strut assembly from below.
- Use the floor jack to lower the lower control arm slowly just enough to create clearance.
- Pull the strut assembly out through the wheel opening.
- Use a pry bar only gently if extra clearance is needed.
Step 9: Install the New Loaded Strut Assembly
- Compare the new loaded strut assembly to the old one before installation.
- Make sure the upper mount studs and lower mounting eye face the same direction as the old strut.
- Guide the new strut up into the strut tower by hand.
- Install the upper strut mounting nuts by hand first to hold it in place.
- Use a 15mm socket to snug the upper nuts, but do not fully tighten yet.
Step 10: Install the Lower Strut Bolt
- Use the floor jack to raise or lower the lower control arm until the lower strut holes line up.
- Slide the lower strut bolt through by hand.
- Install the lower strut nut by hand.
- Use a 24mm socket and 24mm wrench to snug the lower strut mounting hardware.
Step 11: Reconnect Brackets and Stabilizer Link
- Use a 10mm or 13mm socket to reinstall any brake hose or ABS wire brackets removed earlier.
- Use a trim clip removal tool or your hand to reseat any plastic ABS wire retainers.
- If removed, use an 18mm socket and 18mm wrench to reconnect the stabilizer bar link.
Step 12: Torque the Fasteners
- Use a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench and the correct socket to tighten the lower strut mounting hardware to Torque to 350 Nm (258 ft-lbs).
- Use a torque wrench and 15mm socket to tighten the upper strut mounting nuts to Torque to 63 Nm (46 ft-lbs).
- Use a torque wrench and 18mm socket if the stabilizer bar link was removed: Torque to 85 Nm (63 ft-lbs).
- Use a torque wrench and 10mm or 13mm socket to tighten brake hose or ABS brackets snugly if no exact torque is listed on the replacement hardware.
Step 13: Repeat on the Other Side
- Use the same tools and steps to replace the front strut assembly on the opposite side.
- Always replace front struts in pairs.
Step 14: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Place the wheel back on the hub by hand.
- Install the lug nuts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 15: Lower the Truck and Torque the Wheels
- Use the floor jack to raise the truck slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands.
- Lower the truck fully to the ground.
- Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 135 Nm (100 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Bounce the front of your Ranger gently and listen for clunks.
- ✅ Check that brake hoses and ABS wires are clipped back in place and not stretched.
- ✅ Test drive slowly at first. Listen for knocking, rubbing, or pulling.
