- Park your Canyon on a flat, solid surface.
- Set the parking brake and place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Wear safety glasses and gloves before lifting the truck.
- Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
- A spring compressor is a tool that safely squeezes the coil spring so the strut can be disassembled. Beginners should avoid this by using loaded struts.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts
- Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front lug nut about one turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Loosen before lifting.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Truck
- Use a floor jack under the front frame crossmember to lift your Canyon.
- Place jack stands under the frame rails on both sides.
- Lower the truck slowly onto the jack stands.
- Gently shake the truck by hand to confirm it is stable.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and set them flat on the ground.
Step 4: Mark the Strut Position
- Use a paint marker to mark the position of the strut where it meets the steering knuckle.
- The steering knuckle is the heavy metal part that the wheel hub and brake rotor attach to.
- This mark helps keep the alignment close enough to drive carefully to an alignment shop.
Step 5: Disconnect the Brake Hose and ABS Wire Brackets
- Use a 15mm socket or 15mm wrench to remove the brake hose bracket bolt from the strut, if equipped.
- Use a trim clip remover or flat-blade screwdriver to release any ABS wheel speed sensor wire clips from the strut.
- Do not pull on the wire itself.
- The ABS wire is the small electrical cable going to the wheel hub for the anti-lock brake system.
Step 6: Disconnect the Sway Bar End Link from the Strut
- Use an 18mm wrench to hold the sway bar end link stud if it spins.
- Use an 18mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the upper sway bar end link nut from the strut bracket.
- Move the end link away from the strut.
- The sway bar end link is a small vertical link that connects the strut to the sway bar to reduce body roll.
Step 7: Support the Lower Control Arm
- Place the floor jack lightly under the lower control arm.
- Raise it just enough to support the suspension. Do not lift the truck off the jack stand.
- The lower control arm is the large suspension arm under the wheel hub.
Step 8: Remove the Lower Strut-to-Knuckle Bolts
- Spray the lower strut bolts and nuts with penetrating oil.
- Use a 21mm wrench on the nut and a 21mm socket with 1/2-inch drive breaker bar on the bolt head.
- Remove the two lower strut-to-knuckle nuts and bolts.
- If the bolts are stuck, tap them out carefully with a rubber mallet.
- Do not let the steering knuckle hang by the brake hose or ABS wire.
Step 9: Remove the Upper Strut Mount Nuts
- Open the hood.
- Locate the three upper strut mount nuts at the top of the strut tower.
- Use a 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the three upper mount nuts.
- Hold the strut with one hand while removing the last nut.
- Do not remove the center shaft nut.
Step 10: Remove the Strut Assembly
- Carefully guide the strut assembly down and out through the wheel well.
- Use a pry bar 18-inch only if gentle movement is needed to separate the strut from the knuckle.
- Keep brake hoses and wires clear while removing the strut.
Step 11: Install the New Loaded Strut Assembly
- Position the new strut assembly into the strut tower.
- Start the three new upper mounting nuts by hand.
- Use a 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the nuts, but do not fully torque them yet.
- Make sure the strut is facing the same direction as the original one.
Step 12: Attach the Strut to the Steering Knuckle
- Align the lower strut bracket with the steering knuckle using your paint marks as a guide.
- Use a pry bar 18-inch gently if needed to line up the holes.
- Install the new lower strut-to-knuckle bolts and nuts by hand.
- Use a 21mm socket, 21mm wrench, and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lower fasteners to Torque to 140 Nm (103 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Torque the Upper Strut Mount Nuts
- Use a 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the three upper strut mount nuts.
- Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
- Do not tighten the center shaft nut.
Step 14: Reconnect the Sway Bar End Link
- Insert the sway bar end link stud into the strut bracket.
- Install a new nut by hand.
- Use an 18mm wrench to hold the stud if it spins.
- Use an 18mm socket and 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the nut to Torque to 65 Nm (48 ft-lbs).
Step 15: Reattach the Brake Hose and ABS Wire Brackets
- Use a 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to reinstall the brake hose bracket bolt.
- Torque to 12 Nm (106 in-lbs).
- Use a trim clip remover or needle-nose pliers to seat ABS wire clips back into their brackets.
- Make sure the brake hose and ABS wire are not twisted or stretched.
Step 16: Repeat on the Other Front Side
- Use the same tools and steps to replace the strut assembly on the opposite side.
- Always replace front struts in pairs for safe, even handling.
Step 17: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Install each wheel onto the hub.
- Start all lug nuts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 18: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack to lift the truck slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands.
- Lower your Canyon fully to the ground.
- Use a 22mm socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).

- ✅ Bounce each front corner by hand. The truck should settle quickly without repeated bouncing.
- ✅ Turn the steering wheel left and right while parked. Listen for clunks or rubbing.
- ✅ Test drive slowly first. Check for pulling, clunks, or steering wheel off-center.
- ✅ Recheck the lug nut torque after 25-50 miles.
