- 📋 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels. Wheel chocks are wedges that stop the vehicle from rolling.

- 📋 Spray penetrating oil on the lower strut bolts, sway bar end link nuts, and upper strut mount nuts.
- 📋 Mark the position of the lower strut bolts with a paint marker. This helps keep the alignment close enough to drive to an alignment shop.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts
- Use a 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front wheel lug nut about half a turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Loosen before lifting for stability.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Truck
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the front of your Colorado at the front frame crossmember.
- Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the frame rails on both sides.
- Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands and lightly shake the truck to verify it is stable.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use a 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and set them flat under the frame as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Support the Lower Control Arm
- Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) under the lower control arm near the ball joint.
- Lift only enough to support the arm. Do not raise the truck off the jack stand.
- The lower control arm is the large lower suspension arm that holds the bottom of the wheel hub area.
Step 5: Disconnect the Sway Bar End Link from the Strut
- Use an 18mm socket and 18mm combination wrench to remove the sway bar end link nut from the strut bracket.
- Push the sway bar end link out of the strut bracket by hand. The sway bar end link is the short vertical link that connects the sway bar to the suspension.
- If it is stuck, use a rubber mallet to tap it free gently.
Step 6: Free Brake Hose and ABS Wire Brackets
- Use a 13mm socket or 15mm socket as equipped to remove any brake hose or ABS wire bracket bolts attached to the strut.
- Use a trim clip removal tool to release plastic wiring clips if fitted.
- Let the hose and wiring sit naturally without pulling or stretching.
Step 7: Mark the Lower Strut Position
- Use a paint marker to draw alignment marks across the strut bracket and steering knuckle.
- The steering knuckle is the large metal part that the wheel hub and brake rotor attach to.
- These marks help you install the new strut close to the original position.
Step 8: Remove the Lower Strut-to-Knuckle Bolts
- Use a 21mm socket or 24mm socket with a 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the lower strut nuts.
- Hold the bolt heads with a 21mm combination wrench or 24mm combination wrench as needed.
- Remove the nuts, then slide the bolts out. Use a rubber mallet to tap the bolts out if needed.
- Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to control the lower control arm as the knuckle separates from the strut.
Step 9: Remove the Upper Strut Mount Nuts
- Open the hood.
- Locate the three upper strut mount nuts at the top of the strut tower.
- Use a 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the three upper strut mount nuts.
- Hold the strut with one hand while removing the last nut so it does not fall.
- Do not remove the center strut shaft nut.
Step 10: Remove the Old Strut Assembly
- Guide the old strut assembly down and out through the wheel opening by hand.
- Use a pry bar 18-inch only if light movement is needed to clear the steering knuckle.
- Do not pry against the brake hose or ABS wiring.
Step 11: Install the New Loaded Strut Assembly
- Guide the new front loaded strut assembly up into the strut tower by hand.
- Install the new upper strut mount nuts finger-tight first.
- Use a 15mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to snug the nuts evenly.
- Final tighten the upper strut mount nuts to Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
Step 12: Attach the Strut to the Steering Knuckle
- Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to raise or lower the lower control arm until the bolt holes line up.
- Slide in the new lower strut-to-knuckle bolts by hand.
- Install the new nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 21mm socket or 24mm socket with a 1/2-inch drive torque wrench, while holding the bolt heads with a 21mm combination wrench or 24mm combination wrench.
- Tighten the lower strut-to-knuckle fasteners to Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).
- Match your paint marks closely.
Step 13: Reconnect the Sway Bar End Link
- Insert the sway bar end link stud into the strut bracket by hand.
- Install the new sway bar end link nut.
- Use an 18mm socket and 18mm combination wrench to tighten the nut.
- Tighten the sway bar end link nut to Torque to 65 Nm (48 ft-lbs).
Step 14: Reattach Brake Hose and ABS Wire Brackets
- Use a 13mm socket or 15mm socket to reinstall the brake hose and ABS wire bracket bolts.
- Tighten small bracket bolts snugly to Torque to 10 Nm (89 in-lbs).
- Use a trim clip removal tool to help seat plastic clips without breaking them.
- Turn the steering by hand left and right to make sure nothing pulls tight.
Step 15: Repeat on the Other Side
- Use the same tools and steps to replace the strut assembly on the opposite side.
- Always replace front struts in pairs for balanced braking, steering, and ride height.
Step 16: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Install each wheel by hand and thread the lug nuts on by hand first.
- Use a 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Raise the truck slightly with the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum), remove the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum), and lower the truck to the ground.
- Use a 19mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).
Step 17: Bounce and Settle the Suspension
- Push down firmly on the front bumper area by hand several times to settle the suspension.
- Use a flashlight if available to inspect that the struts, hoses, and wiring are seated correctly.
- If anything looks twisted, loose, or stretched, do not drive until corrected.
