📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Sierra on level ground and set the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
- Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the truck.
- Spray penetrating oil on the upper strut nuts and lower strut bolts. Let it soak for several minutes.
- Use complete loaded strut assemblies. A loaded strut already includes the spring, mount, and shock assembled together.
- An alignment is strongly recommended after replacing front struts.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts
- Use a 22mm lug nut socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen each front lug nut about half a turn.
- Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
- Break them loose before lifting.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Front of the Truck
- Use a floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) under the front frame crossmember to raise the front of your Sierra.
- Place jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum) under the frame rails on both sides.
- Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands.
- Give the truck a light push by hand to confirm it is stable before working.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 22mm lug nut socket and ratchet wrench to remove the lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and set them flat under the frame as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Mark the Strut Position
- Use a paint marker to mark the position of the lower strut mount against the lower control arm.
- This helps place the new strut close to the original position before alignment.
Step 5: Support the Lower Control Arm
- Place the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) under the lower control arm near the ball joint area.
- Raise the jack just enough to lightly support the lower control arm.
- The lower control arm is the large metal arm that holds the bottom of the wheel hub and suspension.
Step 6: Remove the Lower Strut Bolts
- Use an 18mm socket, 21mm socket, 18mm wrench, or 21mm wrench as needed to remove the two lower strut mounting bolts and nuts.
- If the bolts are tight, use the breaker bar 1/2-inch drive.
- Use a dead blow hammer to gently tap the bolts out if they are stuck.
- Do not hit the threaded end directly unless the nut is loosely installed to protect the threads.
Step 7: Remove the Upper Strut Nuts
- Open the hood.
- Use a 15mm socket and ratchet wrench to remove the three upper strut mounting nuts from the top of the strut tower.
- Support the strut with one hand while removing the final nut.
- Do not remove the large center nut on the strut assembly.
Step 8: Remove the Old Strut Assembly
- Lower the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) slightly under the lower control arm to create room.
- Use a pry bar 18-inch carefully if the strut needs help clearing the lower control arm.
- Remove the strut assembly through the wheel opening.
- Move slowly and watch brake hoses.
Step 9: Install the New Loaded Strut Assembly
- Position the new front loaded strut assembly into the strut tower.
- Start the three upper mounting nuts by hand first.
- Use a 15mm socket and ratchet wrench to snug the upper nuts, but do not fully torque them yet.
Step 10: Align the Lower Strut Mount
- Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to raise or lower the control arm until the lower strut holes line up.
- Use the pry bar 18-inch gently if needed to align the bolt holes.
- Install the lower strut bolts and nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
Step 11: Tighten the Strut Mounting Hardware
- Use an 18mm socket, 21mm socket, 18mm wrench, or 21mm wrench to tighten the lower strut bolts.
- Use a torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lower strut bolts to Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).
- Use a 15mm socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the upper strut nuts to Torque to 50 Nm (37 ft-lbs).
Step 12: Repeat on the Other Side
- Use the same tools and steps to replace the strut assembly on the opposite front side.
- Always replace both front struts as a pair.
Step 13: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Install the wheels by hand and thread the lug nuts on by hand first.
- Use a 22mm lug nut socket and ratchet wrench to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- The star pattern means tightening across the wheel instead of going around in a circle.
Step 14: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum) to lift the truck slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands (rated 3-ton minimum).
- Lower your Sierra until the tires touch the ground fully.
- Use the 22mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 190 Nm (140 ft-lbs).
✅ After Repair
- Push down firmly on the front bumper and release. The truck should rise and settle quickly without bouncing several times.
- Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock while parked and listen for clunks or rubbing.
- Test drive slowly first. Listen for loose hardware, clunks, or steering pull.
- Recheck the lug nut torque after 25-50 miles using the 22mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive.
- Schedule a front wheel alignment as soon as possible to protect the tires and restore steering accuracy.
