- Shift to Park and apply the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks behind both rear wheels.
- Open the hood before lifting the car.
- Spray penetrating oil on the lower strut bolts and sway bar link nut if they look rusty.
- Do not disconnect the battery. No infotainment or scan-tool setup is required.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts
- Use a 21mm lug nut socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen each front wheel lug nut about half a turn.
- Do this while the tires are still touching the ground.
- Loosen first, lift second.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Front of the Vehicle
- Use a floor jack to lift the front of your Corolla at the front center jacking point.
- Place jack stands under the approved front side support points.
- Lower the vehicle gently onto the jack stands.
- Keep the floor jack lightly touching the front support point as a backup.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use a 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels.
- Slide the wheels under the car as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Mark the Strut Position
- Use a paint marker to draw alignment marks where the strut meets the steering knuckle.
- The steering knuckle is the heavy metal part behind the brake rotor that turns with the wheel.
- This mark helps you install the new strut close to the old position.
- Alignment is still required afterward.
Step 5: Detach the Brake Hose and ABS Wire Brackets
- Use a 12mm socket and ratchet 3/8-inch drive to remove the brake hose bracket bolt from the strut.
- Use a 10mm socket if your ABS wire bracket uses a smaller retaining bolt.
- If the ABS wire is held by a clip, use a flat-blade screwdriver or needle-nose pliers to gently release it.
- Do not pull on the brake hose or ABS wire.
Step 6: Disconnect the Stabilizer Bar Link from the Strut
- Use a 17mm socket and ratchet 3/8-inch drive to remove the stabilizer bar link nut from the strut bracket.
- If the stud spins, hold the stud with the correct internal hex or use a 17mm combination wrench while loosening the nut.
- The stabilizer bar link connects the strut to the sway bar and helps reduce body roll in turns.
Step 7: Support the Steering Knuckle
- Place the floor jack lightly under the lower control arm or steering knuckle area.
- Do not lift the vehicle. Just support the suspension so it does not drop suddenly.
- This protects the brake hose and axle from being stretched.
Step 8: Remove the Lower Strut Bolts
- Use a 22mm socket, 22mm combination wrench, and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen the two large strut-to-steering knuckle nuts.
- Use a rubber mallet to tap the bolts out if they are tight.
- Use a pry bar 18-inch only if needed to gently separate the strut from the knuckle.
- Keep one hand on the strut and make sure the knuckle is supported.
Step 9: Remove the Upper Strut Mount Nuts
- Open the hood and locate the three upper strut mount nuts at the top of the strut tower.
- Use a 14mm socket and ratchet 3/8-inch drive to remove the three upper mount nuts.
- Do not remove or loosen the center strut shaft nut.
- Hold the strut with one hand while removing the last nut.
Step 10: Remove the Old Strut Assembly
- Lower the old strut assembly out through the wheel well by hand.
- Watch the brake hose and ABS wire so they do not catch on the strut.
- Compare the old and new strut assemblies side by side before installing.
- Make sure the spring seat, brackets, and upper mount orientation match.
Step 11: Install the New Strut Assembly
- Guide the new complete strut assembly up into the strut tower by hand.
- Install the three upper mount nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use a 14mm socket and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the upper mount nuts to Torque to 47 Nm (35 ft-lbs).
Step 12: Connect the Strut to the Steering Knuckle
- Align the lower strut bracket with the steering knuckle.
- Use the floor jack to raise or lower the knuckle slightly until the bolt holes line up.
- Install the two large lower strut bolts by hand.
- Use a 22mm socket, 22mm combination wrench, and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lower nuts to Torque to 240 Nm (177 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Reconnect the Stabilizer Bar Link
- Insert the stabilizer bar link stud into the strut bracket.
- Use a 17mm socket, 17mm combination wrench, and torque wrench 3/8-inch drive to tighten the nut to Torque to 74 Nm (55 ft-lbs).
- If the stud spins, hold it steady while tightening.
Step 14: Reattach the Brake Hose and ABS Wire Brackets
- Use a 12mm socket and ratchet 3/8-inch drive to reinstall the brake hose bracket bolt.
- Use a 10mm socket if the ABS wire bracket uses a 10mm bolt.
- Tighten small bracket bolts snugly with the ratchet 3/8-inch drive. Do not overtighten them.
- Make sure the brake hose and ABS wire are routed the same way as before.
Step 15: Repeat on the Other Side
- Repeat Steps 4 through 14 on the other front strut.
- Use the same tools and the same torque specs.
- One side at a time is easier.
Step 16: Reinstall the Front Wheels
- Put the front wheels back on by hand.
- Install the lug nuts by hand first.
- Use a 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
Step 17: Lower the Vehicle and Torque the Lug Nuts
- Use the floor jack to lift the vehicle slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands.
- Lower your Corolla to the ground.
- Use a 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).

- ✅ Bounce each front corner of your Corolla gently. It should settle quickly without clunking.
- ✅ Turn the steering wheel left and right while parked. Listen for rubbing, popping, or binding.
- ✅ Test drive slowly first. Check for noise over small bumps.
