🔧 1500 - Front Strut Assembly Replacement

Your 1500 uses a front coilover-style strut assembly: the shock absorber and coil spring are together as one unit. Replacing the complete strut assembly is safer and easier for a beginner than compressing the spring and swapping only the strut cartridge.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Your 1500 has a 48V eTorque mild-hybrid system. Do not touch orange high-voltage cables or hybrid components.
  • ⚠️ Disconnect the 12V negative battery cable before starting. This helps prevent accidental electrical issues while working near sensors and wiring.
  • ⚠️ Never work under the truck supported only by a jack. Use jack stands on solid frame points.
  • ⚠️ The coil spring is under heavy tension. For a beginner, replace the complete loaded strut assembly only. Do not disassemble the spring unless using a professional wall-mounted spring compressor.
  • ⚠️ Replace front struts in pairs. Replacing only one side can cause uneven ride height, braking feel, and handling.
  • ⚠️ An alignment is required after strut replacement to prevent tire wear and steering pull.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🅿️ Park your 1500 on level ground, shift to Park, and set the parking brake.
  • 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • 🔋 Use a 10mm wrench to disconnect the 12V negative battery cable. Tuck it aside so it cannot spring back onto the terminal.
  • 🖊️ Use a paint marker to mark the current position of the strut lower mount and upper control arm hardware. This helps you get close enough to drive safely to an alignment shop.
  • 💡 A loaded strut assembly means the coil spring, shock, upper mount, and hardware are preassembled. This avoids handling a compressed spring.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts

  • Use a 21mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen the front lug nuts about 1 turn while the tires are still on the ground.
  • Do not fully remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loosen first, lift second.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Truck

  • Use a 3-ton floor jack to lift the front of your 1500 at the front crossmember.
  • Place 3-ton jack stands under the frame rails on both sides.
  • Lower the truck gently onto the jack stands.
  • Use the floor jack to lightly support the lower control arm on the side you are working on.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheel

  • Use a 21mm socket and ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove the wheel and place it flat under the frame as a backup safety measure.

Step 4: Disconnect the Sway Bar Link from the Lower Control Arm

  • The sway bar link is the short vertical link that connects the sway bar to the suspension arm.
  • Use an 18mm socket and 18mm wrench to remove the lower sway bar link nut from the lower control arm.
  • Move the link aside by hand.
  • If the stud spins, hold the stud with the correct wrench surface while turning the nut with the 18mm socket.

Step 5: Free the Upper Control Arm from the Steering Knuckle

  • The steering knuckle is the large metal part that holds the wheel hub and connects the suspension arms.
  • Use a 21mm socket or wrench to loosen and remove the upper ball joint nut.
  • Use a ball joint separator tool to separate the upper ball joint from the steering knuckle.
  • Support the steering knuckle by hand so it does not pull on the brake hose or wheel speed sensor wire.
  • Do not hammer directly on the ball joint threads.

Step 6: Remove the Lower Strut Bolt

  • Use penetrating oil on the lower strut bolt and nut.
  • Use a 24mm socket on one side and a 24mm wrench on the other side to remove the lower strut bolt and nut.
  • Use a rubber mallet to tap the bolt out if it is stuck.
  • Keep the floor jack lightly supporting the lower control arm.

Step 7: Remove the Upper Strut Mount Nuts

  • Open the hood.
  • Use a 13mm socket, extension, and ratchet to remove the three upper strut mount nuts from the top of the strut tower.
  • Do not remove the center nut on the strut assembly. That center nut holds spring tension.
  • Support the strut with one hand while removing the final upper nut.

Step 8: Remove the Old Strut Assembly

  • Slowly lower the floor jack under the lower control arm just enough to create room.
  • Use a pry bar 18-inch to gently guide the lower control arm downward if needed.
  • Remove the strut assembly out through the wheel well.
  • Keep brake hoses and sensor wiring clear while removing it.

Step 9: Install the New Loaded Strut Assembly

  • Position the new loaded strut assembly into the wheel well.
  • Align the top studs with the strut tower holes.
  • Install the new upper strut mounting nuts by hand first.
  • Use a 13mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the upper strut mounting nuts to Torque to 41 Nm (30 ft-lbs).

Step 10: Install the Lower Strut Bolt

  • Use the floor jack to raise or lower the lower control arm until the lower strut eye lines up with the mounting holes.
  • Slide the new lower strut bolt through the mount by hand.
  • Install the new nut by hand.
  • Use a 24mm socket, 24mm wrench, and torque wrench to tighten the lower strut bolt to Torque to 203 Nm (150 ft-lbs).

Step 11: Reconnect the Upper Ball Joint

  • Guide the upper ball joint stud back into the steering knuckle by hand.
  • Install the new upper ball joint nut by hand.
  • Use a 21mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the nut to Torque to 61 Nm (45 ft-lbs).
  • If the ball joint stud spins, use light upward pressure from the floor jack under the lower control arm while tightening.

Step 12: Reconnect the Sway Bar Link

  • Position the sway bar link back into the lower control arm.
  • Install the new sway bar link nut by hand.
  • Use an 18mm socket, 18mm wrench, and torque wrench to tighten the nut to Torque to 95 Nm (70 ft-lbs).

Step 13: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Repeat Steps 3 through 12 on the opposite front strut.
  • Use the same tools and the same torque values.
  • Replace both front struts as a pair.

Step 14: Reinstall the Wheels

  • Place each wheel back onto the hub.
  • Thread the lug nuts by hand to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 21mm socket and ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 15: Lower the Truck and Torque the Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack to raise the truck slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands.
  • Lower the truck fully to the ground.
  • Use a 21mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to Torque to 176 Nm (130 ft-lbs).

Step 16: Reconnect the Battery

  • Use a 10mm wrench to reconnect the 12V negative battery cable.
  • Tighten the terminal snugly. Do not overtighten it.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Bounce the front of your 1500 lightly by hand. It should settle quickly without clunks.
  • ✅ Turn the steering wheel left and right while parked. Listen for rubbing, popping, or binding.
  • ✅ Test drive slowly first. Check braking, steering return, and any unusual noises.
  • ✅ Recheck the lug nut torque after 25-50 miles using a 21mm socket and torque wrench.
  • ✅ Schedule a front wheel alignment immediately. Strut removal changes suspension position enough to cause tire wear.
  • ✅ If warning lights appear after reconnecting the battery, drive a short distance in a straight line. Steering angle and stability systems often relearn after movement.
