🔧 Wrangler - Front Shock Absorber Replacement
Your Wrangler does not use front struts; it uses separate coil springs and shock absorbers. This guide covers replacing the front shock absorbers, which is the part most people mean when they say “struts” on your Wrangler.
Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 1-2 hours
⚠️ Safety & Precautions
- ⚠️ Work on level ground and support your Wrangler with jack stands before going underneath.
- ⚠️ Never rely on a floor jack alone; it can slowly leak down or slip.
- ⚠️ Replace front shocks in pairs so both sides handle evenly.
- ⚠️ Do not remove the coil spring or spring retainers for this job.
- ⚠️ If the vehicle has been driven recently, allow suspension and brake parts to cool before working.
🔧 Required Tools
You'll need the following tools for this repair:
- Floor jack (rated 3-ton minimum)

- Front shock upper bushings and washers - Qty: 2 sets
- Front shock lower mounting bolts and nuts - Qty: 2 sets
📋 Before You Begin
- 🅿️ Park your Wrangler on a flat, solid surface.
- 🛞 Place wheel chocks behind the rear tires.
- 🔧 Spray penetrating oil on the upper shock stem nut and the lower shock bolt on both front shocks. Let it soak for 10-15 minutes.
- 📌 A shock absorber controls bouncing. It does not hold the vehicle up like a spring does.
- 📌 A torque wrench tightens bolts to the correct tightness so parts are secure without being over-tightened.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Lift and Support the Front
- Use the wheel chocks to block the rear tires.
- Use the floor jack under the front axle tube near the center to raise the front of your Wrangler.
- Place jack stands under the front axle tubes, one on each side.
- Lower the floor jack slowly until the axle is resting securely on the jack stands.
- Keep the floor jack lightly touching the axle as extra support, but do not rely on it alone.
- Shake gently to confirm stability.
Step 2: Remove the Lower Shock Bolt
- Use an 18mm socket, 18mm wrench, and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the lower shock mounting bolt and nut.
- Remove the nut, then slide the bolt out of the lower shock mount.
- If the bolt is tight, use the rubber mallet to gently tap it out.
- Support the shock by hand as the lower bolt comes out.
Step 3: Remove the Upper Shock Nut
- At the top of the shock, use a 16mm wrench to loosen the upper stem nut.
- If the shock stem spins, hold the very top of the stem with a 6mm wrench while turning the nut with the 16mm wrench.
- Remove the upper nut, washer, and rubber bushing.
- Use needle-nose pliers if needed to remove old broken bushing pieces.
- Pull the shock absorber down and out through the bottom.
- Rusty upper nuts may take patience.
Step 4: Prepare the New Shock
- Use your hands to compare the new shock absorber to the old one. The mounting style and length should match closely.
- If the new shock is held compressed by a shipping strap, leave the strap on until the shock is positioned near the mounts.
- Install the lower upper-bushing pieces on the shock stem by hand in the same order as supplied with the new shock.
Step 5: Install the New Shock
- Guide the new shock up through the lower mount and into the upper shock hole by hand.
- Install the upper rubber bushing, washer, and nut by hand first. Hand-threading helps prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 16mm wrench and 6mm wrench to tighten the upper nut until the rubber bushing bulges slightly to about the same width as the washer.
- Do not crush the upper rubber bushing flat.
- If your shock uses a torque-style upper nut, tighten with a torque wrench and 16mm crowfoot-style wrench to Torque to 27 Nm (20 ft-lbs).
Step 6: Install the Lower Shock Bolt
- Align the lower shock eye with the axle bracket by hand.
- If needed, use the floor jack to move the axle slightly up or down until the holes line up.
- Slide the lower bolt through the bracket and shock.
- Install the nut by hand.
- Use the 18mm socket, 18mm wrench, and torque wrench to tighten the lower shock bolt to Torque to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Repeat on the Other Side
- Use the same 18mm socket, 18mm wrench, 16mm wrench, 6mm wrench, and torque wrench to replace the opposite front shock.
- Make sure both lower shock bolts are torqued to 108 Nm (80 ft-lbs).
- Make sure both upper bushings are seated evenly and not crushed flat.
Step 8: Lower the Vehicle
- Use the floor jack to lift the front axle slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands by hand.
- Lower your Wrangler slowly to the ground with the floor jack.
- Remove the wheel chocks after the vehicle is fully on the ground.
✅ After Repair
- ✅ Bounce the front bumper by hand. Your Wrangler should settle quickly without repeated bouncing.
- ✅ Take a slow test drive on a smooth road first, then listen for clunks over small bumps.
- ✅ Recheck the lower shock bolts after the first short drive using an 18mm socket, 18mm wrench, and torque wrench.
- ✅ If the steering wheel is off-center, the vehicle pulls, or tires show uneven wear, get an alignment check.
