š§ Grand Cherokee - Strut Replacement
Replacing struts means removing the complete front or rear strut assemblies and installing new ones, then getting a wheel alignment. On your Grand Cherokee, the steps and parts differ a lot between front and rear, and also depend on whether you have adaptive damping/electronic suspension (struts with an electrical connector).
Difficulty Level: Advanced | Estimated Time: 3-6 hours (per axle)
ā ļø Safety & Precautions
- ā ļø Strut springs are under heavy tension; use a wall-mounted or quality spring compressor or buy complete quick-strut assemblies.
- ā ļø Support your Grand Cherokee on jack stands; never rely on a jack.
- ā ļø If your struts have a wire connector, do not pull on the wiring; release the lock and unplug carefully.
- ā ļø Plan for a professional alignment right after front strut replacement.

š Before You Begin
- š æļø Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels (for front struts) or front wheels (for rear struts).
- š§° Decide now: Quick-strut (pre-assembled) is safest/easiest; a āquick-strutā is a complete unit with spring + mount already installed.
- š If your struts have an electrical connector (adaptive damping), turn the ignition off and keep the key away from the vehicle while unplugging connectors.
šØ Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Quick check (so I give you the exact steps)
- Look at the strut and tell me: does it have an electrical connector on it (yes/no)? Use flashlight if needed.
- Confirm which youāre replacing: Front, Rear, or All four.
Step 2: Lift and remove the wheel(s)
- Break the lug nuts loose with a breaker bar and correct socket (do not remove yet).
- Lift with a floor jack at the correct jacking point and set the vehicle on jack stands.
- Remove the wheel using a socket and set it aside.
Step 3: Unbolt brackets and links from the strut
- Spray fasteners with penetrating oil.
- Remove any brake hose/ABS wire brackets from the strut using a socket or wrench.
- If the sway bar end link attaches to the strut, remove it using wrenches.
- If equipped, unplug the strut electrical connector using needle-nose pliers only for the lock tab (donāt pull the wires).
Step 4: Mark alignment reference (front struts only)
- Use a paint marker to mark the strut-to-knuckle position as a reference.
- This helps drive to the alignment shop.
Step 5: Remove the strut-to-knuckle bolts
- Support the lower control arm/knuckle area lightly with the floor jack.
- Remove the lower strut-to-knuckle bolts using a breaker bar and correct sockets.
- Use a pry bar as needed to separate the strut from the knuckle.
Step 6: Remove the upper mount nuts and pull the strut out
- Open the hood (front) or access the upper mount area (rear; may require interior trim) using a trim clip removal tool.
- Remove the upper mount nuts using a socket.
- Guide the strut assembly out of the wheel well.
Step 7: If reusing the spring (skip if using quick-struts)
- Install the spring compressor (specialty) and compress the spring evenly; a āspring compressorā is a tool that safely squeezes the coil spring so the top nut can be removed.
- Remove the center top nut using a pass-through strut nut socket set (specialty).
- Transfer the mount/bearing and rubber isolators to the new strut in the same orientation.
Step 8: Install the strut assembly
- Position the strut up into the tower and hand-start the upper nuts using a socket.
- Slide the strut into the knuckle and install the lower bolts using sockets and wrenches.
- Reconnect sway bar end link and brackets using wrenches and sockets.
- Reconnect the electrical connector (if equipped) by pushing until it clicks.
- Torque to OEM spec using a torque wrench (Iāll give the exact ft-lbs once you confirm front vs rear and adaptive vs non-adaptive).
Step 9: Reinstall wheel and lower the vehicle
- Install the wheel and snug lug nuts using a socket.
- Lower off jack stands using the floor jack.
- Torque lug nuts in a star pattern using a torque wrench to OEM spec.
ā After Repair
- š§Ŗ Test drive slowly first and listen for clunks over bumps.
- š§ Get a 4-wheel alignment as soon as possible (required after front struts).
- š Recheck all visible fasteners and wiring clips after the first short drive.
š° DIY vs Shop Cost
Shop Cost: $900-$2,200 (parts + labor, per axle varies by strut type)
DIY Cost: $350-$1,400 (parts only, per axle varies by strut type)
You Save: $550-$800+ by doing it yourself!
Shop labor rates vary but typically run $100-$150/hour. This repair takes a shop approximately 3-6 hours.
