🔧 RAV4 - Front Lower Control Arm Replacement

The front lower control arms connect the front suspension to the body and help keep the wheels positioned correctly. Replacing them on your RAV4 requires safely lifting the vehicle, removing the front wheels, separating the ball joints, and installing new arms with the suspension tightened at normal ride height.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support your RAV4 with jack stands only. Never work under a vehicle held up by a floor jack alone.
  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses. Suspension parts can release suddenly when separated.
  • ⚠️ Do not hammer directly on aluminum steering knuckles or ball joint studs.
  • ⚠️ Replace control arms in pairs if both sides are worn. This keeps handling balanced.
  • ⚠️ A wheel alignment is required after this repair.
  • ⚠️ Final tightening of control arm bushing bolts must be done at normal ride height. Tightening with the suspension hanging can twist and damage the new bushings.

📋 Before You Begin

  • Park your RAV4 on flat, solid ground.
  • Shift to Park and set the parking brake.
  • Place wheel chocks behind the rear wheels.
  • Loosen the front lug nuts slightly before lifting the vehicle.
  • Plan for a professional alignment immediately after the repair.
  • Spray rusty fasteners with penetrating oil before starting if needed.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts

  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen each front lug nut about one turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loosen on the ground first.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Vehicle

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum at the front center jacking point.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the correct front side support points.
  • Lower your RAV4 gently onto the jack stands.
  • Shake the vehicle lightly by hand to confirm it is stable before working underneath.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and place them flat under the side of the vehicle as an extra safety backup.

Step 4: Mark the Control Arm Position

  • Use a paint marker to mark the position of the old control arm bushings and brackets.
  • This does not replace an alignment, but it helps position the new arm close to where the old one sat.

Step 5: Remove the Lower Ball Joint Cotter Pin

  • Use needle-nose pliers to straighten and pull out the cotter pin from the lower ball joint nut.
  • A cotter pin is a small split metal pin that keeps a nut from backing off.
  • Discard the old cotter pin. Do not reuse it.

Step 6: Loosen the Lower Ball Joint Nut

  • Use a 19mm socket with a 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the lower ball joint nut.
  • Leave the nut threaded on a few turns while separating the joint.
  • This helps keep the arm from dropping suddenly.

Step 7: Separate the Ball Joint from the Control Arm

  • Install the ball joint separator tool (specialty) between the ball joint and control arm.
  • Tighten the separator using a 19mm socket or the tool’s required drive until the taper pops loose.
  • A tapered joint is a cone-shaped fit that locks tightly when the nut is tightened.
  • Remove the ball joint nut fully using the 19mm socket.

Step 8: Remove the Rear Control Arm Mounting Bolt

  • Support the control arm lightly with the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Use a 22mm socket, 22mm wrench, and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the rear control arm mounting bolt and nut.
  • Remove the bolt and nut by hand once loose.

Step 9: Remove the Front Control Arm Mounting Bolt

  • Use a 19mm socket, 19mm wrench, and 1/2-inch drive breaker bar to loosen the front control arm mounting bolt and nut.
  • Remove the bolt and nut while keeping one hand on the control arm.

Step 10: Remove the Old Control Arm

  • Use a pry bar 18-inch to gently work the old control arm out of the subframe pockets.
  • Use a dead blow hammer 2-lb only on the control arm if it is stuck.
  • Do not pry against brake lines, ABS wires, or hybrid high-voltage cables.

Step 11: Install the New Control Arm

  • Slide the new front lower control arm assembly into the subframe pockets by hand.
  • Use the pry bar 18-inch only as needed to line up the bolt holes.
  • Install the front and rear mounting bolts by hand first.
  • Do not fully tighten the bushing bolts yet.

Step 12: Connect the Lower Ball Joint

  • Guide the ball joint stud into the control arm by hand.
  • Install the new front lower ball joint nut.
  • Use a 19mm socket and torque wrench 20-250 Nm to tighten the ball joint nut.
  • Torque to 98 Nm (72 ft-lbs).
  • Install a new front lower ball joint cotter pin using needle-nose pliers.

Step 13: Pre-Tighten the Control Arm Bolts

  • Use a 19mm socket, 22mm socket, and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the control arm mounting bolts.
  • Do not final torque them while the suspension is hanging.
  • Final torque happens at ride height.

Step 14: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Use the same tools and steps to replace the control arm on the opposite side.
  • Replacing both sides together is recommended when wear is similar.

Step 15: Load the Suspension to Normal Ride Height

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum under the outer control arm area to raise the suspension until the vehicle just begins to lift from the jack stand.
  • This simulates normal ride height so the rubber bushings are not twisted.
  • Keep the jack stand in place for safety.

Step 16: Final Torque the Control Arm Mounting Bolts

  • Use a 19mm socket, 22mm socket, 19mm wrench, 22mm wrench, and torque wrench 20-250 Nm to tighten the control arm mounting bolts at ride height.
  • Front control arm mounting bolt: Torque to 137 Nm (101 ft-lbs).
  • Rear control arm mounting bolt: Torque to 183 Nm (135 ft-lbs).
  • Repeat the ride-height torque process on the other side.

Step 17: Reinstall the Front Wheels

  • Install the front wheels by hand.
  • Thread the lug nuts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch drive ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.

Step 18: Lower the Vehicle and Torque Lug Nuts

  • Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to raise your RAV4 slightly off the jack stands.
  • Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
  • Lower the vehicle fully to the ground.
  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 20-250 Nm to tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • Turn the steering wheel slowly left and right while parked. Listen for clunks or binding.
  • Drive slowly at first and confirm your RAV4 tracks straight and brakes normally.
  • Schedule a four-wheel alignment as soon as possible.
  • Recheck all visible fasteners after the first short drive.
  • If the steering wheel is off-center or the vehicle pulls, avoid highway driving until aligned.
