🔧 RAV4 - Front Lower Control Arm Replacement

This repair replaces the front lower control arms on your RAV4. The lower control arm holds the wheel in position and contains bushings plus the lower ball joint connection area, so worn arms can cause clunks, wandering steering, uneven tire wear, or loose handling.

Assumption: This guide covers the front lower control arms. Rear suspension arms use a different procedure.


⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Support your RAV4 with jack stands on solid, level ground. Never work under a vehicle held only by a jack.
  • ⚠️ Keep the ignition OFF and the key fob away from the vehicle. This prevents unexpected hybrid system wake-up.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch orange high-voltage cables or hybrid system components.
  • ⚠️ The control arm bolts are high-torque fasteners. Use a proper breaker bar and torque wrench.
  • ⚠️ Do not loosen or remove the subframe unless you have alignment pins and the correct service setup.
  • ⚠️ A wheel alignment is required after replacing control arms.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🧭 Use a paint marker to mark the original control arm mounting bolt positions before removal.

  • 🧰 A “ball joint” is a pivot joint that lets the steering knuckle move while the suspension travels up and down.
  • 🧰 A “castle nut” is a slotted nut secured by a cotter pin so it cannot loosen.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Lug Nuts

  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen the front lug nuts about 1/2 turn.
  • Do not remove the lug nuts yet.
  • Loosen before lifting.

Step 2: Raise and Support the Front of the Vehicle

  • Use a floor jack rated 3-ton minimum at the front center jacking point to lift your RAV4.
  • Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the front side support points.
  • Lower the vehicle slowly onto the jack stands.
  • Keep the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum nearby for supporting suspension parts later.

Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels

  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to remove the front lug nuts.
  • Remove both front wheels and set them flat on the ground.

Step 4: Remove Lower Splash Shield Access Panels

  • Use a trim clip removal tool to remove plastic clips from the lower splash shield as needed.
  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet 3/8-inch drive to remove small bolts securing the front lower splash shield sections.
  • Move the shield enough to access the front control arm mounting bolts.

Step 5: Mark the Control Arm Mounting Positions

  • Use a paint marker to mark around the control arm mounting bolts and brackets.
  • This helps place the new arm close to the original position.
  • Still get an alignment.

Step 6: Support the Steering Knuckle

  • Use a bungee cord 24-inch to support the steering knuckle or brake assembly from the strut spring area.
  • This prevents the brake hose and ABS wire from being pulled when the ball joint separates.

Step 7: Remove the Ball Joint Cotter Pin and Nut

  • Use needle-nose pliers to straighten and remove the cotter pin from the lower ball joint stud.
  • Use a 19mm socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to loosen the lower ball joint castle nut.
  • Leave the nut threaded on a few turns at first. This helps catch the joint when it pops loose.

Step 8: Separate the Lower Ball Joint from the Control Arm

  • Use a ball joint separator (specialty) between the lower control arm and ball joint stud area.
  • Apply pressure until the joint separates with a pop.
  • Use a ball-peen hammer 16 oz only for light taps on the separator tool, not on the ball joint threads.
  • Remove the loosened castle nut fully with the 19mm socket and move the ball joint stud out of the control arm.

Step 9: Loosen the Front Control Arm Mounting Bolt

  • Spray the front control arm bolt and nut with penetrating oil.
  • Use a 22mm wrench to hold the nut if accessible.
  • Use a 22mm socket, socket extension 6-inch, 1/2-inch drive, and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen the front mounting bolt.
  • Remove the bolt and nut once loose.

Step 10: Loosen the Rear Control Arm Mounting Bolt

  • Spray the rear control arm bolt and nut with penetrating oil.
  • Use a 24mm wrench to hold the nut if accessible.
  • Use a 24mm socket, socket extension 3-inch, 1/2-inch drive, and breaker bar 1/2-inch drive to loosen the rear mounting bolt.
  • Remove the bolt and nut once loose.

Step 11: Remove the Old Control Arm

  • Use a pry bar 18-inch to gently work the control arm out of the subframe pockets.
  • Lower the arm out of the vehicle by hand.
  • Compare the old and new arms side by side to confirm the shape, bushing locations, and ball joint hole match.

Step 12: Position the New Control Arm

  • Slide the new front lower control arm into the subframe pockets by hand.
  • Use a pry bar 18-inch gently if needed to line up the bushing sleeves.
  • Install the new front and rear mounting bolts by hand.
  • Do not fully tighten the bushing bolts yet.

Step 13: Reconnect the Lower Ball Joint

  • Guide the lower ball joint stud into the new control arm.
  • Install the new castle nut by hand.
  • Use a 19mm socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the ball joint castle nut to Torque to 98 Nm (72 ft-lbs).
  • If the cotter pin hole does not line up, tighten the nut slightly more until the slot aligns. Do not loosen it to align.
  • Install a new cotter pin using needle-nose pliers and bend the ends over securely.

Step 14: Load the Suspension Before Final Tightening

  • Place the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum under the outer control arm area.
  • Raise the arm until the suspension sits near normal ride height.
  • This prevents twisting the new rubber bushings at rest.
  • Tighten bushings at ride height.

Step 15: Torque the Control Arm Mounting Bolts

  • Use a 22mm socket, 22mm wrench, and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the front mounting bolt to Torque to 165 Nm (122 ft-lbs).
  • Use a 24mm socket, 24mm wrench, and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the rear mounting bolt to Torque to 200 Nm (148 ft-lbs).
  • Lower the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum after both bolts are torqued.

Step 16: Repeat on the Other Side

  • Use the same tools and steps to replace the opposite front lower control arm.
  • Take your time and compare both sides as you work.

Step 17: Reinstall Splash Shields

  • Use a 10mm socket and ratchet 3/8-inch drive to reinstall the lower splash shield bolts.
  • Use a trim clip removal tool by hand to help seat plastic clips without bending them.

Step 18: Reinstall the Front Wheels

  • Install both front wheels by hand.
  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and ratchet 1/2-inch drive to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
  • Raise your RAV4 slightly with the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum, remove the jack stands, and lower the vehicle to the ground.
  • Use a 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 1/2-inch drive to tighten the lug nuts to Torque to 103 Nm (76 ft-lbs).

Step 19: Final Safety Check

  • Use safety glasses and visually inspect both control arms.
  • Confirm both cotter pins are installed.
  • Confirm all mounting bolts are torqued.
  • Confirm brake hoses and ABS wires are not stretched, twisted, or rubbing.

  • ✅ Drive slowly at first and listen for clunks, pops, or scraping.
  • ✅ If the steering wheel is off-center, avoid highway speeds until alignment is done.
  • ✅ Get a professional four-wheel alignment as soon as possible.
  • ✅ Recheck the front lug nut torque after 25-50 miles using a 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench.
  • ✅ Reinspect the control arm bolts and ball joint cotter pins after the first short test drive.
